Recent Trend in the Roof tile Studies Centered at the Three Kingdoms Period(Excerpts)

평기와에 관한 조사는 1980년대에 들어와서부터 본격적인 조사연구가 시작되었던 것으로 인식된다. 이 시기에는 百濟기와의 문양을 중심으로 한 分類와 伴出遺物 및 層位別 조사를 근거하여 編年을 제시하였다. 80년대 後半과 90년대 初半에는 기와에 대한 정밀한 관찰을 통하여 문양뿐만 아니라, 製作틀(瓦桶)에 관한 부분까지 관심을 갖게 되었다. 이 製作틀은 둥근 통나무의 속을 파내어 만든 圓筒瓦桶과, 나무를 좁고 길게 다듬거나 대나무를 쪼개어 각 片마다 구멍을 뚫어 끈으로 엮은 동쪽와통(模骨)이 확인되었다. 90년대 초에는 경기도 북부지역에서 高句麗遺蹟에 대한 지표조사가 이루어져 고구려 기와에 대한 조사가 시작되었다. 이후 中國내 高句麗 유적에 대한 답사가 활발하여 연구자가 실제 관찰·검토할 수 있는 기회가 많아졌다. 이러한 기회는 곧 고구려 기와에 대한 제작기법과 과학적 분석까지 손댈 수 있게 된 것이다. 또 新羅故地에서도 평기와에 대한 현지 比較·觀察작업이 점차 활성화되면서, 紋樣과 製作技法 등에서 三國간의 비슷한 점과 차이점이 조금씩 드러났다. 앞으로 이러한 기와 연구의 進展은 三國의 기와에 대한 綜合的 檢討와 技術의 交流 및 傳播經路 등도 실체를 드러낼 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

It is generally thought that roof tiles began to be intensively studied from the beginning of the 1980s. Chronologies appeared about that time on the basis of the studies of relics, classifications of Baekje tiles by their patterns, and investigations of strata. By the late 1980s through the early 190s, scholars began to study not only patterns but also molds of tiles with great interest. Two kinds of molds were confirmed: cylindrical molds made by hollowing out logs and assembly molds made by fixing pieces of wood together by passing a cord through holds in them. Studies of the roof tiles of Goguryeo were launched in the early 1990s with a study of tiles at a Goguryeo tomb site in the northern Gyeonggi-do area. Opportunities have since increased for Korean scholars to visit China and survey in person Goguryeo relics remaining there. This enabled scholars to expand the scope of studies of Koguryo roof tiles to their manufacturing techniques as well as a scientific analysis of them. As comparative studies and investigation of roof tiles in the old territories of Silla have increased significantly in recent years, similarities and differences in pattern and manufacturing techniques among the three kingdoms are being revealed gradually. It is expected that progress in roof tile studies will eventually bring to light the transmission routes for exchanges of technology among the three countries.
