Baekje s faith in the Four Devas

백제의 사천왕신앙은 『三國史記』 백제본기 의자왕 20년조에 보이고 있는 天王寺를 통해 그 존재를 찾아볼 수 있다. 또한 일본의 四天王寺가 백제계 사찰이라는 점에서도 백제에 사친왕신앙이 존재하고 있었음을 확인할 수 있다. 백제의 사천왕신앙은 일본의 사천왕신앙과 신라의 사친왕신앙이 호국적인 성격을 가지고 있는 것에 비추어 같은 성격을 가지고 있었음을 추론해 볼 수 있다. 특히 의자왕대의 천왕사와 관련한 기록이 백제의 멸망을 예고하는 가운데 언급되고 있는 만큼, 백제의 사천왕신앙이 호국적인 성격을 가지고 있었음을 가늠해 볼 수 있는 것이다. 이런 호국적인 성격은 사천왕신앙의 근본경전이라고 할 수 있는 『金光明經』 제6사천왕품에서 나타난 국토수호 의지와 人世의 왕을 보호하는 역할이 부여되어 있는 것이라 생각된다. 그런 만큼 백제의 사천왕신앙은 사비천도와 매우 밀접한 관련이 가지고 있었음을 추측해 볼 수 있다. 백제의 사천신앙과 관련한 흔적은 聖王대에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 聖王이 541년에 양무제에게 요구하고 있는 涅槃 둥의 經義에 『金光明經』이나 이와 관련한 註釋書가 포함되어 있을 가능성이 많기 때문이다. 이는 백제의 사천왕신앙이 성왕대에는 이미 전개되고 있었음을 말해준다. 백제 사천왕신앙은 호국의 성격이 왕권강화와 이어지면서 전개되고 있는 것으로 보인다. 호국적인 성격이 왕권의 강화와 연결되는 것은 성왕대 왕권강화와 관련한 일련의 내용들이 호국적인 성격을 가지고 있는 것에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 또한 釋迦佛信仰과 帝釋信仰으로의 전개는 사천왕신앙이 왕권의 강화와 연결되면서 그 확장된 모습을 보여주고 있는 것이라 생각한다.

Baekje s faith in the Four Devas can be found in Chonwang-sa Temple(天王寺) that is mentioned in the King Oija chapter of the Baekje book in the chronicles of the Three States(三國史記). It can also be testified by the fact that the Four Devas Temple of Japan is originated from Baekje(百濟). Baekje s faith in the Four Devas is believed to have a characteristic of the protection of the country when we look at the similar faith of Japan and Shilla. It is especially true when we consider that while the documents of King Oija(義慈王) all predict the decline of Baekje, they mention Chonwang-sa Temple. This characteristic is the result of the will of protecting the country and the king that is stated in the Four Devas chapter of Suvarnaprabhasottamaraja-Sutra(金光明經), the fundamental sutra of the Four Devas faith. for this reason, the transfer of the capital to Sabi is closely related to this faith. Baekje s faith in the Four Devas, it is presumed, was first introduced at the time of King Sung s reign. It is because when King Sung asked King Muje of Lyang(梁武帝) for sutras, Subarnaprabhasottamaraja-Sutra(金光明經) or other related books could have been included. Baekje s faith in the four Devas could have developed with its characteristic of protecting the country strongly connected to the reinforcement of kingship. the faith of Sakyamuni Buddha(釋迦佛信仰) and the faith of the king of the heaven(帝釋神仰) can be seen as an expanded form of faith in the Four Devas to strengthen kingship.
