The Six Dynasties Culture and Wa

南朝와 倭의 교류는 『宋書』 등에 보이는 倭五王 기사에 나타나며 10번 이상의 교류가 있었던 것으로 기록되나, 고고학적으로 그것을 증명할 만한 문물은 적다. 일본에서 이 시대의 고분에서 발견되는 畵文帶神獸鏡 등의 거울을 그 증거로 보는 견해가 있으나, 이들은 왜국 내부에서 漢代 거울을 모델로 제작한 것으로, 남조 거울이 아니라고 생각된다. 교섭을 나타내는 유물로서는 유리 용기나 마구 등이 있는데, 특히 藏/木 古墳의 안장에서 볼 수 있는 문양은 남조의 영향을 직접 받은 것으로 추정된다.

Long distance interaction between southern China during the Six dynasties (Nanchao) and Japanese Wa is well addressed in Songshi, but difficult to test archaeologically. Some artifacts including mirrors with animal symbols has been allegedly regarded as the evidence showing such interaction, but it is likely that the artifacts were locally made imitating Chinese Han mirrors. Glasses and horse equipments, however, may suggest the direct interaction between the two region, as the design on a saddle from Fujinoki Tomb shows.
