금강유역의 충적지 지형은 크게 충적단구, 자연제방, 구하도, 배후습지, 선상지로 구성되어 있다. 특히 오창에서 조치원에 이르는 미호천 서쪽지역은 안성천유역과 더불어 한반도에서 가장 넓은 충적단구가 펼쳐진 지형으로서 선사시대 이래 가장 안정적인 지형조건을 갖추고 있는 곳이다. 이러한 금강유역의 지형조건은 하천변을 따라 형성된 고분군들과 밀접히 연관되면서 고분군 축조집단의 거점지로서 선택되었을 가능성이 높다. 거점지의 조건은 상위 계층의 존재, 중심교역지로서의 기능, 교통중심지로서의 역할 등을 모두 충족시켜야만 한다. 본고에서 주목하는 점은 한성백제기 금강유역권 고분군의 분포를 중심으로 고분의 계층성과 영역권을 설정하고, 영역권별 중심거점지역의 위치와 지형환경을 찾아보는 데 있다. 충적지의 지형조건과 고분분포에 따른 영역권 설정을 통해 분석한 결과, 한성백제기 금강유역의 거점도시는 하천변의 만곡된 지형에 형성된 충적단구와 단구화된 자연제방 상에 입지하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 곡교천유역, 금강지류인 미호천유역, 금강 중류역에서 이들의 거점지로서 최적지에 해당하는 지형과 환경적 요인을 찾을 수 있었는데, 이들은 아마도 독자적인 정치적 영향력을 행사하면서 한성백제 세력 혹은 중국과 직간접적인 교류를 통하여 발전하였을 것이다. 한편, 수운을 통한 교역이 활발했을 경우 지리적환경으로 볼 때 금강유역권은 세종지역을 중심으로 하는 정치집단에 의해 주도되었을 가능성이 높고, 서천지역의 집단이 중개자 역할을 수행했으리라 판단된다. 5세기 후반 이후가 되면 이러한 지방 거점지가 급작스럽게 붕괴되는데, 이는 백제의 중앙집권화에 의한 지방도시의 재편에서 그 원인을 찾을 수 있다.
Alluvial plain along the River Geum consists of river terrace. natural levee, old river channel, backswamp and alluvial fan. The west of Miho-stream ectioned from Ochang to Jochiwon is the largest river terrace in Korean Peninsula, together with the Anseong Stream area. In the east of Miho stream, Jeongju, Chungbuk, is the developed terrace, which once was natural levee. In the Daepyeong and Jangnam plains, the widely spreading terraced old natural levee, distanced from the river stream, is present. In the Naseong-ri located on the west of the Jangnam plain, a curved outlined river-terrace along Jocheon and Naseongri hills was formed. Although the presence of a political and economic stronghold in Gongju is highly likely given Suchon-ri cemetery, no trace of such a local center was detected in the alluvial plain. Along the riverside, west of Gunsu-temple, in the Buyeo area, continuously connected natural levee and backswamp are placed. In the Nonsan area, although there are various widely spreading natual levees and terrace, but the area is highly affected by frequent floods and considered instable. In Seochon region, the lower stream of the River Geum with no terrace or natural levees, the likely presence of a stronghold such as a port connected to marine trade network of that time, is highly expected. This geomorphic environment of the River Geum appears to have been closely related to densely congregated riverside cemeteries and fits for a plausible location of a stronghold by people who constructed cemeteries. Eligibilities for local center locations include the presence of elite group, functioning as main trade center and traffic center concurrently. It is paid attention to distinguish various territorial zones and embodiedhierarchy based on the distribution of cemeteries during the Hanseong-Baekje period. Further, it was attempted to detect the location of each local center and assess its natural environment. This research was promoted by the finding that three local center sites, Naseong-ri, Galmae-ri, and Pungnap-dong, have the common environmental settings, revealed through the previous aerial photograph analysis.
