Sakamoto Taro s Recognition of Baekje History

고대 한일관계사 연구에 있어서 최대의 난관은 잔존 사료의 편재성과 그 성격의 문제이다. 고대 한일관계사의 중심을 이루고 있는 4~7세기 사료는 압도적으로 일본측에 의해 편찬되었다. 그것도 『일본서기』에 편중되어 있다. 따라서 『일본서기』에 대한 사료적 성격을 정확히 파악하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다. 즉 천황중심적 이념에 의해 윤색되어 있는 부분을 제거하고 그로부터 사실관계를 어떻게 이끌어 내느냐가 진실에 가장 잘 접근하는 방법이 될 것이다. 이러한 『일본서기』에 대한 본격적인 연구의 단초를 연 인물이 바로 坂本太郞이다. 坂本은 사료 중심의 실증주의적 사관에 입각해 가능한 객관적 해석을 추구하고자 했다. 그러나 근본적으로 『일본서기』 사료에 신뢰를 두고 원전 및 인용방식을 검토하는 과정을 중시했기 때문에 오늘날 그의 연구는 한계를분명히 드러내고 있다. 그렇다하더라도 坂本의 『일본서기』 백제관계 기사에 대한 연구방법 및 이해방식은 선구적이었으며, 이후 연구에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다는 점은 부정할 수 없다.

The greatest difficulty in the study of the ancient Korea-Japan history is the ubiquity and character of the remaining historical materials. Historical documents from the 4th to 7th centuries, which form the center of the ancient Korea-Japan history, were overwhelmingly compiled by the Japan. It is biased toward 「Nihonsyoki」. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to accurately grasp the historical characteristics of the 「Nihonsyoki」. In other words, removing the part colored by the emperor-centered ideology and deriving facts from it will be the best way to approach the truth. Sakamoto Taro is the person who opened the beginning of a full-scale study of this 「Nihonsyoki]. Sakamoto tried to pursue a possible objective interpretation based on a historical positivist view. However, since he went through the process of reviewing the original source and citation method with confidence in the historical sources of 「Nihonsyoki」, his research today clearly reveals its limitations. Even so, it cannot be denied that Sakamoto s research method and understanding method of 「Nihonsyoki」 on Baekje related articles was pioneering and had a great influence on subsequent research.
