선비(鮮卑)의 ‘백색(白色)’ 숭상 고찰

A Study on Xianbei’s reverence for ‘White’ :Focusing on the historical material to early Xianbei and Murong Xianbei

본 연구의 목적은 몽골 민족이 오늘날까지도 중요하고 신성시하게 여기고 있는 색상 중 하나인‘백색’을 언제부터 선호하고 숭상했는지를 고찰하는 것이다. 이를 위해 몽골 민족의 주요 원류(源流) 중 하나인 선비(鮮卑)에서 ‘백색’이 어떠한 상징성을가진 색상이었는지 고찰하였다. 특히, 초기 선비와 모용선비(慕容鮮卑)와 관련된 기록을 중점적으로 분석해보았다. 분석 결과, 선비에서 백색은 ‘최강(最强)’, ‘최고(最高)’, ‘하늘(天)’, ‘건장(健 壯)’, ‘신성(神聖)’, ‘길상(吉祥)’ 등을 상징하는 색상이었음을 확인할 수 있다. 이는 일찍이 선비에서부터 백색을 선호하고 숭상했음을 보여주며 전진(前秦)을 비롯한 모용선비의 대척점에 있던 이들이 모용선비를 ‘백로(白虜)’라고 비하했던 사실 역시 이들의 백색 선호와 숭상에서 비롯되었음도 알 수 있다. Ⅲ장에서 선비(鮮卑)라는 족명(族名)을 분석해 본 결과, 선비가 ‘백(白)’이라는 뜻을 지닌 ‘’의음역으로 파악된다. 이는 선비라는 민족이 본래부터 ‘백(白)’을 숭상하던 민족이었을 가능성이크다는 것을 시사한다. 즉, 늦어도 선비(鮮卑)라는 명칭이 사용되었던 시기부터는 이들 민족이백색을 선호하고, 숭상했다고 생각된다.

The purpose of this study is to examine when the Mongolians began to preference and reverence white , one of the important and holy color to date. For this research, i analyze the symbolism of white in Xianbei, one of the main origins of the Mongolians. Specially, this paper focuses on the historical material to Early Xianbei and Murong Xianbei. According to the analysis results, white color symbolized such as ‘most powerful’, ‘supreme’, ‘heaven’, ‘strong’, ‘divine’ and ‘auspicious’ in Xianbei. Also, this result shows that Xianbei had preferenced and reverenced white early on. In addition, it can be seen that Murong Xianbei’s enemies, including Former Qin, disparaged Murong Xianbei as ‘White babarians(白虜)’ also stems from their preference and reverence for white. In chapter Ⅲ analyzed the ethnic name Xianbei. The results show that this name is likely to be a transliteration of ‘sʌrb()’ with the meaning of white. And this suggests that it is highly possible that Xianbei was originally a people who reverenced white. In other words, when they used the name Goguryeo, they already preferenced and reverenced white.
