평전쓰기 과제를 통한 PBL 글쓰기의 수업과 지도

PBL Writing Lessons and Guidance through a Critical Biography Writing Class

이 글은 세종대학교 수업 중에 진행했던 PBL 글쓰기 과제의 실제 운용 사례를 분석하고 해당 과제의 PBL적 성격과 그 의미를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 2018년 1학기 세종대학교 ‘문제해결을 위한 글쓰기와 발표’ 과목에서 주어진 문제 중 개별 글쓰기 PBL과제는 ‘우리 주위의 평범한 이웃들을 대상으로 한 평전쓰기’ 였다. 해당 문제는 기존의 평전, 자서전 등의 장르문학을 비판적으로 독해하고, 이를 새로운 대상을 통해 새롭게 접근하는 것을 시도 하였다. 과제 수행과정에서 팀 활동이 반드시 전제되어 있었다는 점에서 프로젝트적 요소를 가지고 있으며, 비구조적 성격을 띠고 있었다는 점에서 PBL 과제로 적합한 성격을 가지고 있었다. 동시에 최근 대학 내 글쓰기가 다소 소홀했던 표현주의적 글쓰기를 통해 글쓰기가 갖는 근원적 의미를 발견할 수 있게 하였다. 더불어 기존 평전, 자서전이 사회적으로 성공한 엘리트를 대상으로 했던 것에 비해, 우리 사회 속의 평범한 이웃들의 생애사에 집중함으로써 한국 사회 속 타인의 인생을 통해 자신의 인생 또한 성찰하게 하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 글쓰기 과정 중에 반드시 실시하도록 한 대상자와의 인터뷰는 세대 간 소통을 증진시키는 효과를 낳고, 한국 미시사의 한 켠을 만들어낸 자료를 직접 구성해내는 경험을 하였다는 점에서 의미를 지니는 것이었다. 또한 자료 조사에서부터 집필의 모든 과정이 수강생들의 지적 능력을 향상시키고 전공 강좌에서는 경험하지 못한, 성찰과 토론을 가능하게 하였다는 점에서 큰 의의를 지닌 것으로 평가된다.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the actual operation cases of the PBL writing task conducted during a class at Sejong University and to clarify the PBL nature and the meaning of this task. Among the problems given in Sejong University s Writing and Presentation for Problem Solving in the first semester of 2018, the students were assigned with the following PBL writing task: “Write a review of ordinary neighbors around us.” This problem tackled genre literature, such as existing reviews and autobiographies, and attempted to approach it anew through new subjects. It had a project-based element in that team activities were necessarily premised in the process of performing the task. Moreover, it had a subjective-based element suitable for the PBL task in that it had an unstructured characteristic to it. At the same time, the fundamental meaning of writing can be found through expressive writing, which has recently been somewhat neglected in college. In addition, the goal was for the students to reflect on the lives of ordinary people in our society, compared to those of the elites who succeeded in describing existing reviews and autobiographies. Interviews with subjects that had to be conducted during the writing process were meaningful in that the students had the experience of enhancing their inter-generational communication skills and constructing data that ended up creating a sort of Korean micro history. Furthermore, from this study we can see that all processes, from data research to actual writing, have improved the students intellectual abilities and allowed for a degree of reflection and discussion that they were unable to experience from their major courses.
