러시아어에서 어순과 억양은 발화의 소통 구조 및 의미 표현을 위한 중요한 장치이다. 러시아어에서 어순은 문법적으로 고정되어 있지 않고 발화의 소통구조 및 의미 표현을 위해 더욱 활성화되는데, 이러한 어순의 소통적 특성은 필수적으로 억양구조와의 긴밀한 상호작용을 전제로 한다. 러시아어에서 문체적으로 중립적인 발화에서 전형적인 어순은 초점이 발화의 끝에 위치하고 화제가 초점에 선행하는 구조이다. 이와 반대로 초점이 화제에 선행하는 어순의 발화는 화제나 초점에 특별한 소통적 의미가 부가되어 표현성이 풍부한 문체적 특징의 발화로 간주된다. 러시아어의 소통 구조에서 초점을 보다 부각시키는 수단으로는 문두로의 초점 이동, 분절, 그리고 초점부 내 어순 도치를 들 수 있다. 이때 대조 및 강조의미의 초점과 상응하는 대조 및 강조 억양이 흔히 나타난다. 화제를 보다 두드러지게 하는 소통 수단으로는 화제부 내 어순 도치, 주제화, 그리고 주격 화제를 들 수 있다. 이때에도 대조 혹은 강조 의미의 화제가 나타날 수 있다.
In Russian word order and intonation are the most important means of communicational structure. Word order in Russian is not fixed grammatically, but is more active for communicational structure and meaning and these communicative characteristics of word order necessarily presuppose a strict interaction with the intonation structure. A neutral utterance, where there is no semantic or emotional emphasis, is characterized by an objective word order and neutral phrasal stress: the focus is at the end of the utterance and the topic precedes the focus. On the other hand, utterances in word order in which the focus precedes the topic are regarded as utterances of expressive features because special communicative meaning is added to the topic or focus. The means of making the focus more prominent are transfer of the focus to the beginning of the sentence, parceling and rearrangement of word forms in the focus. In these cases, focus may express contrasting or emphatic meaning. The means of making the topic more prominent are rearrangement of word forms in a topic, topicalization and nominative topic. In these cases, a topic of contrast or emphasis may also appear.
