Experimental classification of verbal insight problem by the conceptual representation change restructuring

The purpose of this study is to identify what is the restructuring, the basic mechanism of insight thinking that plays an important role in creative problem solving and to empirically validate the mechanism of a single restructuring that can explain the restructuring of various verbal insight problems. Conceptual representation change restructuring-ability to change initial dominant representation meaning to less dominant secondary presentation meaning- from Gick & Lockhart(1995)’s insight problem classification was decided to be the most general and persuasive restructuring, based on critical analysis result about different((1) Ohlsson s (1992), (2) Dominowski and Dallob (1995), Weisberg s (1995), (4) Gick and Lockhart(1995), Issak and Just(1995)) taxonomy of insight problems and verbal insight problem’s empirical classification. Specifically, 34 major verbal insight problems was classified by applying Gick & Lockhart(1995)’s classification framework. The result is that 28 were classified as conceptual representation change restructuring, 5 were classified as re-coding restructuring, the remaining 1 was classified as problem that do not allow problematic types of implicit constraints. Based on these results, I discuss the role and importance of creativity for the era of the fourth industrial revolution in future studies of the restructuring mechanisms of insight problems.
