A Study on the Characteristics of the Elderly Using the Internet on a Daily Basis: Focused on Comparison by Age with the Pre-elderly Group

In this study, in a situation where the development of digital technology is accelerating due to the development of big data, artificial intelligence, AI, and the 4th industrial revolution, the elderly group classified as the most vulnerable in the digital divide survey with respect to the ability to utilize the latest digital devices In order to find out the ability to use digital, age comparison with the pre-elderly(55+) was conducted. Using the raw data of the 2020 Internet use survey, the digital gap between the elderly and pre-elderly groups was divided into digital accessibility, digital usage ability, and digital usage ability, and the difference was analyzed as a result of analyzing the difference In the age group 55 years and older, the smartphone penetration rate was 99.8%, and the importance of research on digital use and digital use ability is more emphasized than on accessibility research. The study indicated tendency for usage and utilization of internet by the pre-elderly and elderly largely differed depending on the subjects’ age, occupation, and educational background; this difference suggests the need to classify the elderly into various groups and to make policies in accordance with the classification. The study also showed significant tendency for the elderly’s use of mobile device to access instant messages and watching newscasts or movies – media pertaining to their real life. In further studies, it is necessary to do rigorous researches on the elderly groups actively engaging with the internet access.
