A Proposal on the Internet of Things Utilization for Quality Improvement of Investigation Results in Unnatural Death Cases

“변사사건(UD)”을 수사함에 있어서 사망시각 확인은 사망 시각에 따라 범인의 신원이 바뀌거나 타살이 자살로 은폐될 수 있기 때문에 매우 중요하다. 그러나 의료기관에서 사망한 경우를 제외하고는 변사자의 사망시간을 정확하게 파악하기란 현재의 법의학 기술로는 불가능하다. 변사자의 체온 하강이나 시체강직, 위 내용물의 소화정도 등을 통해 사망시간을 개략적으로 추정할 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 기법들은 주변 인자 및 개인적 특성들로 인해 커다란 편차가 발생한다. 이에 대한 해결방법으로 최근, 4차 산업혁명으로 인간의 삶이 디지털 기기와 불가분의 상태에 이르게 되었는 바, 디지털 기기의 로그 On 및 Off 기록뿐만 아니라, 다양한 “사물인터넷(IoT)” 정보들을 활용한다면 사망시각 확인에 한걸음 더 다가갈 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 디지털 데이터 정보 등을 활용하여 사망 시간을 확인할 수 있는 방법에 대하여 제안하였다.

In investigating the case of “Unnatural Death (UD)“, confirmation of the time of death is very important because the identity of the perpetrator may change depending on the time or the murder may be concealed as a suicide. However, it is not possible with current forensic techniques to know exactly when a person died, except when he died in a medical institution. The time of death can be schematically estimated from the unnatural dead body's temperature drop, corpse ankylosis, digestion accuracy of stomach contents, etc., because these techniques cause too large deviations due to peripheral factors and personal characteristics. As a solution to this, the recent Fourth Industrial Revolution has made human life inseparable from digital devices, and not only digital device logon and off recording, but also various “Internet of Things (IoT)” information. If you use it, it will be one step closer to confirming the time of death. Therefore, in this study, let's proposal a method that can confirm the death time by utilizing digital data information.
