温度形容詞｢あつい｣｢あたたかい｣｢ぬるい｣の意味分析: 比喩による意味拡張を中心に

Semantic Analysis of the Temperature-denoting Adjectives “Atsui”, “Atatakai”, and “Nurui”: Focusing on Meaning Extensions Based on Metaphor

本稿は、日本語の温度形容詞｢あつい｣｢あたたかい｣｢ぬるい｣の実例を用いて、各々の複数の意味と意味拡張の様相を認知言語学の観点から分析する。分析の結果を基に意味拡張の様相を図式化することを目的とした。 ｢あつい｣｢あたたかい｣｢ぬるい｣は、プロトタイプである｢基本義｣からメタファ─とメトニミ─の2種の比喩によりその意味が拡張する。 ｢あつい｣と｢あたたかい｣は、各々プロトタイプである｢基本義｣から５つの｢別義｣へと意味が拡張する。さらに、｢基本義｣から下位カテゴリーへと意味拡張が進んでいくことにつれて具体物を対象にした意味から抽象的な意味に移り、類似性によるメタファ─より隣接性や社会․文化的な経験による関連性に基づくメトニミ─によってその意味が拡張している。 ｢あつい｣と｢あたたかい｣は、意味が拡張する課程で触覚から聴覚、触覚から視覚への形容詞の特徴である共感覚的な転用が見られる。しかし、｢ぬるい｣は、プロトタイプである｢基本義｣から１つの｢別義｣へと意味は拡張するが、その意味拡張の課程で転用は見られない。

This paper analyzes each of several meanings and aspects of meaning extensions of “atsui”, “atatakai” and “nurui” from the perspective of cognitive linguistics using naturally-occurring examples. Our goal is to schematize the aspects of meaning extensions based on the result of our analysis. “Atsui”, “atatakai” and “nurui” extend their meaning from “basic meaning”, the prototype meaning of each word, in terms of two types of figurative language: metaphor and metonymy. “Atsui” and “atatakai” extend their meaning from “basic meaning”, the prototype meaning of each word, to five “extended meanings”. Furthermore, as the meaning extension goes on from “basic meaning” to its subcategories, their meaning moves from concrete meaning to abstract meaning, and the meaning would extend by metonymy based on contiguity and relevance concerning socio-cultural experiences rather than metaphor based on similarity. “Atsui” and “atatakai” show diversion, the synaesthetic feature, from tactile to auditory or visual in the process of meaning extension. However, “nurui” does not show diversion in the process of meaning extension although its meaning extends from “basic meaning”, the prototypical meaning of a word, to one “extended meaning”.
