In this article, I consider how ‘wood strips’ have been introduced in textbooks in compulsory education. As of 2022, there are three authorised textbooks of social studies for primary students: Shogaku Shakai published by Kyoiku Shuppan, Atarashii Shakai published by Tokyo Shoseki, and Shogaku Shakai published by Nihon Bunkyo Shuppan. The primary students in Japan use one of these three textbooks. In Section 2, I analyse the description of wood strips in these three textbooks, used for the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders in primary schools. Unlike primary schools, the students in middle schools take a class entitled ‘history’, a subdivided domain of social studies. Currently, eight textbooks of history are authorised and actually used in middle schools. The present study focusses on six of them and analyses how wood strips are introduced in these selected textbooks. The analysis confirms the importance of wood strips in the ancient history of Japan.
