We claim that there are three types of expletive ha- in Korean, all having no inherent theta roles to assign: (a) one is X0-selected by a stative nominal, (b) one is inserted into a v/Voice, and (c) one supports a stranded affix. We claim that this state of affairs is available since each expletive ha- is inserted at different component: X0-selected ha- at the interface between the lexicon and the syntax, v/Voice ha- is inserted when v/Voice is empty due to mismatch in syntactic category between v/Voice and a main predicate whose category is either a N or an A. Finally, supportive ha- is inserted at PF. Based on this claim, we discuss other related issues such as how to distinguish between expletive ha- and heavy ha- and the nature of the difference between expletive ha- and copula -i in Korean.
