구조방정식모형을 통한 과거의 영어 학습 경험, 실제적 L2 자아, 이상적 L2 자아가 노력에 미치는 효과

The Effects of Past English Learning Experience, the Actual L2 Self, and the Ideal L2 Self on Effort through Structural Equation Modeling

이 연구의 목적은 과거의 영어 학습 경험이 실제적 L2 자아와 이상적 L2 자아를 매개로 노력에 미치는 직접 효과와 간접 효과 그리고 총 효과를 조사하는 것이다. 자료는 우리나라의 대학교에서 영어를 필수 교양으로 수강한 대학생 553명을 대상으로 설문 조사를 통하여 수집하였고 구조방정식모형을 사용하여 분석하였다. 자료 분석 결과 과거의 영어 학습 경험이 실제적 L2 자아와 이상적 L2 자아를 매개로 노력에 미치는 간접 효과(ß=.307, p<.01)와 총 효과(ß=.343, p<.001)는 통계적으로 유의미하게 나타났다. 그 주된 이유는 비록 과거의 경험이노력에 미치는 직접 효과는 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았으나(ß=.036, p=.832), 과거의 영어 학습 경험이 실제적 L2 자아(ß=.663, p<.001)와 이상적 L2 자아(ß=.805, p<.001)에 미치는 직접 효과가 유의미했기 때문이라 생각한다. 이러한 발견을 바탕으로 영어 학습, 교수법, 연구 방법, 후속 연구에 대한 이론적이고 교육적인 시사점을 제시하였다.

This research aimed to investigate the direct effect, the indirect effect, and the total effect of past English learning experience on intended effort through the mediation of the actual L2 self and the ideal L2 self. The data were collected by surveying 553 university students in Korea who took English as part of their general education by using questionnaires, and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The result of data analysis showed that the indirect effect (ß=.307, p<.01) and the total effect (ß=.343, p<.001) of past experience on effort through the actual L2 self and ideal L2 self were statistically significant. The main cause for this was that the direct effect of past English learning experience on the actual L2 self (ß=.663, p<.001) and ideal L2 self (ß=.805, p<.001) were significant. However, it should be noted that the direct effect of past experience on effort was statistically insignificant (ß=.036, p=.832). Based on these findings, theoretical and educational implications for English learning, teaching, and research methods were presented, followed by future research areas of interest.
