대학생들의 수업 참여와 교육적 관계

갈등의 측면을 중심으로

대학 교육의 질적 수준은 여러 가지 지표에 의해 평가될 수 있으나, 무엇보다도 핵심적인 것은 대학의 교육주체들이 양과 질의 면에서 높은 수준의 교육을 실천하고 있는가의 여부이다. 대학생들은 수업에 참여함으로써 교수와 교육적 관계를 맺고 배움의 과정을 실천해 가는 기회와 가능성을 갖는다. 그런데 대학생들은 수업참여에 대한 태도, 규범, 가치와 관련된 특정한 문화를 형성하여 교수와 상호작용하게 되며, 그 문화가 어떠한 특징을 갖고 있는가에 따라 교육의 질적 수준과 구체적인 모습이 달라질 수 있다. 따라서 대학생들이 수업 참여에 대해 가지고 있는 생각과 느낌은 무엇인지, 수업에 참여하는 동안 어떤 활동을 중요하게 여기는지, 이러한 인식과 실천이 교육적 관계에 어떤 영향을 주는지를 살펴보는 일이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 대학생들의 수업 참여와 교육적 관계 가운데 나타나는 특징을 살펴보기 위해 A 대학교의 교수, 조교, 학생들을 참여자로 선정하여 질적 연구를 수행하였다. 참여관찰, 심층면담, 현지자료조사의 연구방법을 통해 수업 참여의 일상적인 활동과 맥락을 구체적으로 이해하며 관련 자료를 구성하고 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 ‘과제와 시험에 집중된 수업 참여’, ‘교수와의 일방적 소통’, ‘방해적 간섭으로 작용하는 다른 학생들의 존재’, ‘좋은 학점에 대한 관심’이라는 네 가지 주제로 정리할 수 있었다. 이와 같은 연구 결과를 바탕으로 학생의 수업 참여 문화가 어떤 특징을 가지고 있는지 보여주는 질적 지표들을 구체화하여 대학 구성원들이 공유함으로써 자신들의 활동을 성찰해 볼 수 있도록 지원하고, 교수와 학생 간에 교육을 위한 대화에 참여할 수 있는 다양한 통로를 마련할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다. 본 연구는 학생의 수업 참여 문화를 내부자 관점에서 구체적으로 이해함으로써 더 나은 교육적 관계의 실천을 위해 필요한 변화와 조정이 무엇인지를 탐색하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

The quality level of university education can be evaluated by various indicators, but the most important thing is whether the university’s educational subjects practice a high level of education in terms of quantity and quality. However, college students form a specific culture related to attitude, norms, and values for class participation and interact with professors, and the quality level and specific appearance of education may vary depending on the characteristics of the culture. Therefore, it is necessary to examine what thoughts and feelings college students have about participating in class, what activities they value in class, and how these perceptions and practices affect educational relations. In this study, professors, assistants, and students of A university were selected as participants to examine the aspects of conflict among college students’ participation in classes and educational relationships. Through the research methods of participation observation, in-depth interviews, and local data surveys, the daily activities and contexts of class participation were specifically understood, and related data were constructed and analyzed. Based on these research results, it was suggested that qualitative indicators showing the characteristics of student culture in class participation should be specified to support university members to share and reflect on their activities, and to provide various channels for professors and students to participate in education. This study aims to contribute to exploring the changes and adjustments necessary for the practice of better educational relationships by specifically understanding the student culture of class participation from an insider perspective.
