Seven Seals and the Judgment of God

이 논문은 일곱 인을 일곱 나팔이나 일곱 대접처럼 하나님의 심판으로 볼 수 있는지 여부를 살펴보고자 한다. 이와 관련하여 먼저 일곱 인을 하나님의 심판으로 볼 수 있는 근거들이 설득력이 있는지 검토하고, 이어서 일곱 인을 하나님의 심판으로 볼 수 없는 이유를 제시하고자 한다. 우선 일곱 인을 하나님의 심판으로 보는 근거가 취약하다. 먼저는 스가랴서나 구약에 나타난 하나님의 심판, 그리고 공관복음서에 나타난 재앙들을 근거로 첫째부터 넷째 인을 하나님의 심판으로 보는 것은, 본문의 문맥을 볼 때, 설득력이 약하다. 또한 여섯째 인이 하나님의 심판을 분명하게 담고 있지만, 그것은 두루마리 심판의 범위를 넘기 때문에 두루마리 심판이라고 보기 어렵다. 세 번째로는 일곱인의 4+2라는 구조는 하나님의 심판인 일곱 나팔이나 일곱 대접과 유사하지만 내용면에서 근본적인 차이를 보여준다. 그에 반해 일곱 인은 그 자체로 이것이 하나님의 심판이 아닌 것을 확인해주고 있다. 먼저 일곱 인을 다 뗄 때까지는 두루마리가 완전히 열린 상태가 아니라는 점에서 이 일곱 인의 재앙들은 하나님의 심판으로 보기 어렵다. 다음으로는 일곱 나팔과 일곱 대접과는 달리 일곱인에는 심판의 대상이 분명하게 나타나지 않고 있다. 무엇보다 다섯째인은 하나님의 심판이 아직 일어나지 않고 있음을 확인해주고 있다. 이상의 논의를 종합해볼 때, 일곱 인은 일곱 나팔이나 일곱 대접과 달리 하나님의 심판이라고 보기 어렵고 이것은 복음서에 나온 대로 하나님의 심판이 있기 전 성도들이 박해를 당하는 상황에서 벌어지는 환난으로 보는 것이 적절하다.

This paper examines whether the seven seals can be regarded as God's judgment like the seven trumpets or the seven bowls. In this regard, I will first examine the reasons for the judgment and then suggest the reasons against the judgment. The reasons for God's judgment is not persuasive. First, based on the Zechariah, the other Old Testament, and the Synoptic Gospels, the argument for the first four seals as God's judgment is unpersuasive because of their essential differences from the Old Testament and the Synoptic Gospels. Also, although the sixth seal clearly seems to contain God's judgment, it is difficult to see it as a part of the scroll judgment because these disasters goes beyond the scope of judgment on the scroll. Third, the 4+2 structure of seven seals is similar to the structures of seven trumpets or the seven bowls, which contain the God’s judgment, but it is difficult to regard seven seals as God's judgment because they show a fundamental difference in their contents. In contrast, the seven seals in themselves show that this is not God's judgment. First, the disasters of the seven seals happened before the scroll was not yet fully opened, which means that the judgment on the scroll did not yet start. Second, the sinners and the sins for the punishment are not given in the disasters of seven seals, so it is not clear if the disasters of seven seals are the judgment of God. Above all, the fifth seal confirms that God's judgment has not yet taken place. Considering the above discussion, the seven seals cannot be regarded as God's judgment, unlike the seven trumpets or seven bowls.
