A Study on Factors of Policy Literacy on Energy Acceptance by Energy Source: Focusing on the Comparison the Thermal Energy with Renewable Energy

(Purpose) This study empirically analyzed the factors of policy literacy affecting the acceptance of two energy sources. One is renewable energy, which has recently been spotlighted as an eco-friendly energy, and the other is thermal energy, which has been criticized for its carbon emission. (Design/methodology/approach) This is because it makes us derive factors that negatively or positively affect energy acceptance by comparatively analyzing the factors of acceptance of renewable energy which is to be considered eco-friendly energy and those of acceptance of thermal energy which is not eco-friendly. For the empirical analysis of this study, a nationwide survey was conducted targeting 19-year-old men and women, and 790 questionnaires were used for the analysis. (Findings) As a result, in the case of thermal energy, functional literacy had a positive effect on acceptance, whereas critical literacy had a negative effect. Also, it was analyzed that public participation which is used as a parameter, did not affect energy acceptance. In the case of renewable energy, traditional literacy was found to have a positive effect on acceptance. Public participation did not affect acceptance, as it did not do in the case of thermal power generation. In both energy sources, literacy had a positive effect on public participation. (Research implications or Originality) So, It is needed that the government provide various information about renewable energy to the public. It is because that it will make the public get the transparent information and correct understanding of energy.
