순자(荀子)와 마키아벨리의 현실주의 정치사상

The Political Realism of Xunzi and Machiavelli

본 논문은 순자와 마키아벨리의 문제의식과 해결방식에서 나온 사상을 공히 ‘혼란을 다스리는 방법’이라고 하는 ‘치란지법(治亂之法)의 정치사상’이라고 규정하고자 한다. 이러한 ‘혼란’에 질서를 부여하는 것, 전쟁을 평화로 바꾸는 것은 정치를 현실주의적 관점에서 접근하지 않는다면 실현되기 불가능하며, 그렇기 때문에 두 사상가가 달성하고자 했던 목표인 “치란지법”은 “현실주의적 정치관”에서 기원했다고 할 수 있다. 물론 순자와 마키아벨리는 각기 다른 역사적 정신적 기반 하에 자신들의 사고체계를 구성하였지만, 이들은 공히 극히 혼란스럽고 혼탁한 사회와 정치를 현실적인 관점에서 관찰하고 그런 상황을 해결하기 위한 방법을 찾아 가려는 노력의 결과 자신의 사상체계를 형성하게 되었을 것으로 본다. 이러한 이들의 문제제기는 어쩌면 21세기를 사는 현재적 ‘나’의 문제의식과 마찬가지이다. 즉 민족적, 지역적, 계층적 분열이 상존하는 현재적 상황은 순자와 마키아벨리의 질문과 해법에 대한 맥락적 친화성이 있기 때문이다. 본 논문은 순자와 마키아벨리라는 2인의 사상가들의 사상에 대한 의미상관성을 비교검토하는 것이다. 2인의 구체적인 사상을 전체적으로 비교하기보다는 그들의 객관적인 상황의 공통성과 자신들의 사회가 안고 있는 문제와 그러한 문제를 해결하기 위한 그들의 현실주의적 대안의 현재적 의미만을 논구한다.ms.

This paper is a comparative study of the semantic correlations between the ideas of two thinkers, Xunzi and Machiavelli. Rather than comparing the two specific ideas as a whole, it discusses the commonality of their objective situation, the problems their society holds, and the current meaning of their realistic alternative to solve such problems.
