A subtitle conveys messages through the channels such as dialogues, images, and sound. In subtitle translation, song lyrics requires more careful translation adjustments due to music elements. This paper focuses on examining the English-Korean translation of song lyrics in the subtitle of films and suggesting appropriate translation techniques. The sample used in the research is the English-Korean subtitles of the films Once (2006) and Begin again (2013). A literature review and a descriptive approach are applied to analyze the samples. The findings indicate that literal translation was unexpectedly applied to most of the song lyrics as a translation technique, and substitution and omission as shift techniques were applied to some expressions in harmony with rhythm. Above all, under constraints of subtitle space and time, the translation of song lyrics depended on contexts of previous utterances and rhythm. This paper suggests that the translation of song lyrics in subtitles of films is primarily made by a literal translation technique in order to have the equivalent effects to source language.
