건강하게 오래 살고 싶은 인간의 욕망은 거의 무한에 가깝다. 과거 불로장생을 추구했던 전근대적 허황된 욕망이 제왕권력의 한 이야기로 남아 있는 것처럼, 현대문명에서도 불로장생의 꿈을 실현하고자 하는 첨단의 의생물학 이론들이 최고의 학술지를 통해 회자되고 있다. 노화방지를 향한 첨단의 과학이론들이 성공적으로 실현될 수도 있으나 현재로는 제약권력 혹은 의료 권력의 자본종속을 낳을 위험을 안고 있다는 점을 인지하는 것이 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 점을 경계하면서 노화방지를 행한 수많은 첨단의 이론들, 즉 우상의 이론들의 문제점을 지적한다. 우상의 이론이 갖는 과학적 성과를 인정하면서도, 한편 특정 우상의 이론을 통해서 노화가 해결된다는 식의 일대일 대응론적 사회적 태도를 비판한다. 현대 의생물학 분야에서 노정된 다양한 노화이론들을 소개하면서 그 우상의 이론들이 내적으로 연계되어 있다는 사실을 보여준다. 즉 우상의 이론들이 복합적이고 중층적으로 연결되어 노화현상으로 발현된다는 점을 논변한다. 더 나아가 사회적 환경의 변화 혹은 개인적 생활습관의 변화를 통해 건강노화가 가능하다는 논지를 전개한다. 필자는 이러한 생각을 우상의 이론에 대비하여 상식의 이론이라고 부른다.
This paper presents a critical argument against rosy expectations of the ageing on the basis of ideal theories. Dream of Eternal Youth lasted as the greatest desire of human being up to now from ancient times. Modern Science is trying to find out for a longevity and healthy ageing. Biological medicine therefore is offering so many advanced theories of ageing in order to accomplish the physiological goal. I called them “idol theories” in a view that they can get into commercial tools unfortunately. Some theories of ageing might turn out to be true someday. But surely many of them that claim to solve the problem of ageing ended up just ad-hoc componential theories. In my article I will show that the so called “idol theory” could not be a one-to-one correspondent theory between theory and symptom/gene on ageing. The goal of this article is to search for the possible correlations among so-called idol theories and come up with a new insight on ageing both scientifically and philosophically. A lot of ultrafashionable idol theories can be necessary but not sufficient conditions for the scientific explanation of ageing. Even if we had a bunch of sufficient theories on ageing, we should also have another theory of common sense which our real life depend upon and is derived from, I will argue.
