자기 방어와 사회 안전을 넘어서

Beyond Self Defense and Social Security: Toward a Social and Political Philosophy of Immunity

면역의 계보학에 따르면, 애초에 공적인 의무로부터의 면제라는 법적, 정치적 의미로 사용되었던 면역은 19세기 후반 이후 외부 미생물에 대한 유기체의 자기 방어라는 생물학적, 의학적 의미를 획득하게 된다. 따라서 면역이 본래 가지고 있던 사회ㆍ정치철학적 함의는 완전히 탈각되어 생의학적 담론 속으로 사라졌다는 것이 일반적인 견해였다. 하지만 현대 면역학은 자기(self)와 비자기(nonself)의 구분과 이에 근거한 주체의 구성과 관련하여 새로운 사유를 가능케 하고 있으며, 이를 바탕으로 새로운 면역의 계보학 또한 가능함을 알 수 있다. 특히 이 논문에서는 면역의 사회ㆍ정치철학적 측면을 적극적으로 사유한 에스포지토(R. Esposito), 데리다(J. Derrida, 1930-2004), 해러웨이(D. J. Haraway) 등에 주목하고자 한다. 이들은 외부의 침입에 대항하는 부정의 논리를 갖는 생의학적 면역 개념에서 출발하지만 그것을 무비판적으로 받아들이지는 않는다. 에스포지토는 현대 면역학의 철학에서 논의 되는 면역의 긍정성을 인정하고 이를 ‘긍정적 생명정치’의 계기로 삼고자 하며, 데리다는 자가면역이라는 개념을 통해 현대 사회가 직면한 대립과 갈등의 구조를 설명한다. 해러웨이는 여기서 한 걸음 더 나아가 부정의 논리를 바탕으로 하는 초기 생의학적 면역 개념을 부정하고, 현대 면역학의 학문적, 기술적 발전의 성과들을 근간으로 하여 끝없이 새롭게 구성되는 자기와 비자기를 확립하려는 포스트모던 면역을 전면에 내세운다. 이처럼 면역 개념은 사회ㆍ정치철학의 영역에서 다양한 방향으로 분화되고 있다. 따라서 21세기에 들어 면역학의 논리가 더 이상 통용될 수 없다는 주장은 면역의 사회ㆍ정치철학이 다양하게 분화되는 국면을 제대로 이해하지 않은 채 부정의 논리에 근거한 생의학적 면역 개념에 시선을 고착시킨 결과이다. 면역은 더 이상 이방인의 배제와 포섭과 같은 침입-방어의 논리에만 의존하지 않는다. 면역학의 시대는 아직 끝나지 않았다.

According to the genealogy of immunity, biomedical meaning of immunity, self-defense of the organism against the external microorganism, was established in 19th century. In the first place immunity was a concept of legal and political implications such as exemption from certain obligations to the public. Therefore it is generally accepted that the original meaning of immunity was gone in the biomedical discourse. But in modern immunology, discrimination of ‘self’ and ‘nonself’ make possible to imagine another dimension of philosophical scrutiny of immunity. Especially there are some political philosophers such as Esposito, Derrida and Haraway who regard immunity as a central thesis of their philosophical inquiry. The critical thinking of immunity in Esposito’s works lead to ‘affirmative biopolitics’ based on the negation of a negation in the immunitary logic. In the case of Derrida, autoimmunity is a central thesis of his thought on the struggle and chaos of the modern world. Haraway’s radical rethinking of immunity implied the postmodern immunity as a constructive and ever changing boundaries between self and nonself. Therefore, modern immunology is no longer dependent on the negative quality of immunity as a core concept. Philosophy of immunology with considerations of social and political aspects of immunity will be expanded deeper and wider.
