신학의 공공성과 그 사회적 함의

The Publicness of Theology and its Social Implications

오늘날 세상 속에서 신학은 무엇을 할 수 있고 또 무엇을 해야 하는가? 이 논문은 신학의 공공성이 어떻게 논의되고 있는지, 공적 신학의 흐름이 어떻게 진행되고 있는지, 그 논의와 흐름이 한국 교회와 사회에 어떤 함의를 줄 수 있는지에 대한 일종의 스케치다. 하느님은 사적 차원에서만 체험되고 고백되는 존재가 아니다. 하느님은 삶의 모든 자리에서 자신을 계시한다. 그리스도교 신앙은 사적이고 개인적 차원에서뿐만 아니라 공적이고 공동체적이고 사회적 차원에서도 수행(표현, 고백, 실천)된다. 신학의 공공성은 하느님과 신앙의 공공성(공적 특성)에 토대를 둔다. 학문으로서의 신학 자체도 교회와 세상 속에서 하나의 공적 담론으로 작동된다. 신학자는 교회와 세상 속에서 살아간다. 신학자는 교회와 세상을 연결할 수 있는 유기적 지식인으로 살아야 한다. 신학자 역시 하나의 공인이다. 제2차 바티칸 공의회는 신학이 세상의 징표를 읽어야 하는 사명을 지닌 학문임을 함의하고 있다. 신학은 복음과 신앙의 관점에서 세상을 식별할 수 있어야 하고, 또한 세상 안에 있는 교회와 신앙의 모습을 식별할 수 있어야 한다. 사회 안에서 교회와 신앙의 공적 역할에 대해 성찰하고 탐구하는 공공신학은 신학이 자리하고 있는 지역의 맥락에 따라 다양한 의제들을 다루며 자신의 색깔을 드러내고 있다. 한국의 교회와 사회 안에서 신학은 공적 역할을 제대로 수행하고 있지 못하다. 한국 사회와 교회 안에서 신앙이 어떤 모습으로 작동되고 있는지, 한국 교회가 사회 안에서 어떤 공적 역할을 수행하고 있는지에 대한 신학적 담론들이 제대로 형성되지 못하고 있다. 미래의 한국 공공신학은 신앙의 현실과 교회의 현실을 정확히 직시하고 성찰해야 한다. 미래의 한국 공공신학은 교회와 신앙인들이 신앙의 공공성을 살아낼 수 있도록 자극하고 교육하는 역할을 수행해야 한다. 미래의 한국 공공신학은 교회가 종말론적 완성을 향해 가는 순례자임을 깨닫게 해야 한다. 미래의 한국 공공신학은 삶의 모든 자리에서 신앙을 수행할 수 있는 토대로서의 교회에 관한 새로운 상상력을 불러일으킬 수 있어야 한다.

What can and should theology do in today’s world? This paper is a kind of sketch of how the publicness of theology is being discussed, how the trend of public theology is going on, and how the discussion and trend can have implications for the Korean church and society. God is not a being experienced and confessed only on a private level. God reveals himself in every place in his life. Christian faith is performed (expressed, confessed, practiced) not only at the private and personal level, but also at the public, communal and social level. The publicness of theology is based on the publicness (public character) of God and of faith. Theology itself as a science works as a public discourse in the church and in the world. Theologians live in the church and in the world. Theologians must live as organic intellectuals who can connect the church and the world. The theologian is also a public figure. The Second Vatican Council implies that theology is a discipline with a mission to read the signs of the world. Theology must be able to discern the world from the point of view of the gospel and faith, and must also be able to discern the shape of the church and faith in the world. Public theology, which reflects and explores the public role of the church and faith in society, reveals its own color by dealing with various agendas according to the local context in which theology is located. Theology seems not to play its public role properly in the Korean church and society. Theological discourses about how faith works in Korean society and in the church, and what public role the Korean church is playing in society, have not been properly formed. The future of Korean public theology must accurately face and reflect on the reality of faith and the reality of the church. The future Korean public theology should play a role in stimulating and educating the church and believers to live the publicness of their faith. Korean public theology of the future must make us realize that the church is a pilgrim on the way to eschatological completion. The future Korean public theology should be able to evoke a new imagination about the church as a foundation for carrying out faith in every place of life.
