The Freedom in the Thoughts of Pope Benedict XVI

현대 사회 안에서 우리는 자유가 인간 모두가 누려야 할 가치임에도 불구하고 그 개념이 개인 따라 다르며, 서로 다른 기준을 갖고 있음을 느낀다. 이는 다음의 질문을 가져온다. 그렇다면 무엇이 진정한 자유인가? 어떠한 자유가 최고의 가치를 지니는가? 자유를 향유하기 위해, 모두를 만족시킬 수 있는 최상의 기준을 가지는 것이 가능한가? 이러한 질문에 답하기 위해 본 연구는 현대 사회 안에서의 자유에 대한 분석과 비판, 권고를 꾸준히 수행해 온 베네딕토 16세의 사상을 분석하고자 했다. 현대 시대의 뛰어난 신학자인 베네딕토 16세는 다양한 저서에서 자유의 의미를 언급하였다. 또한 신앙교리성 장관으로서 그리고 교황으로서, 세상의 그릇된 자유의 의미를 재정립하고자 그리고 세속화로부터 교회를 보호하고자 전력을 다 하였다. 그러므로 현대의 자유에 대한 그의 견해와 함께 자유에 대한 원칙들과 그 주요 개념들을 살펴보았다. 그는 이를 근거로 현대시대의 자유의 문제에 대한 논리적 대안을 제시하고자 하였다. 그 결과, 진정한 자유란 무엇이든지 할 수 있는 자유가 아니라 선을 행하는 자유라는 것을 정의할 수 있었다. 또한 진리를 기반으로 타인을 위한 선을 행할 때에 악으로부터 해방됨을 알 수 있었다. 선은 자유의 목표이다. 바꾸어 말하자면, 자유는 윤리적 선의 선택 안에서 진정한 의미를 취득한다.

In modern society, we feel that freedom is a value that all human beings should enjoy, but the concept differs from person to person and has different standards. This brings up the following question. So what is true freedom? What freedoms have the greatest value? In order to enjoy freedom, is it possible to have the best standard that can satisfy everyone? In order to answer these questions, this study tried to analyze the thought of Benedict XVI, who had consistently carried out analysis, criticism, and recommendations on freedom in modern society. Benedict XVI, an outstanding theologian of the modern era, mentioned the meaning of freedom in various writings. He also did all he could, as Minister for Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Faith and as Pope, to redefine the meaning of false freedom in the world and to protect the Church from secularization. Therefore, along with his views on modern freedom, the principles and main concepts of freedom have been examined. He tried to present a logical alternative to the problem of freedom in the modern era based on this. As a result, it was possible to define true freedom as freedom to do good, not freedom to do anything. Also, I could see that when we do good for others based on the truth, we are freed from evil. Goodness is the goal of freedom. In other words, freedom acquires its true meaning in the choice of the ethical good.
