The Role of Human Capital in Economic Development: An Empirical Evaluation Using Regional Data of Korea

본 연구는 우리나라 11개 지역의 1965~2015년 기간으로 구성된 패널자료를 구축하여 인적자본의 성장효과를 분석하였다. 패널모형 추정결과, 평균 학교교육연수로 대표되는 인적자본 스톡은 1인당 실질 GRDP 성장률에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치며, 학교 교육 1년의 증가는 5년간 경제성장률을 약 3.7% 포인트 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 거시경제 버전의 Mincer 방정식 추정결과 우리나라 학교 교육에 대한 수익률은 약 8% 정도로 미국과 비슷한 수준인 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 이론의 예측대로 노동경험은 1인당 실질 GRDP 증가율에 양(+)의 효과를 미치며, 그 효과는 경험이 증가할수록 체감하는 것으로 나타났다.

We construct a panel data set of 11 regions of Korea over the period from 1965 to 2015 and examine growth effects of human capital. Our result is as follows. Human capital stock represented by average years of schooling has statistically significant effects on growth rate of real per-capital GRDP and an increase of additional one year of eduction raises the growth rate by approximately 3.7% point over the next five years. We also estimate macroeconomic version of Mincer equation. The result implies that the rate of return to one additional year of schooling is approximately 8%. Finally, working experience has statistically significant effects on regional economic growth.
