곤차로프의 “전함함<빨라다>”에서 본 조선의 시대상 연구

A Study on the Phases of the Times of Choson from the Goncharov’s Work: Frigate <Pallada>

본 연구의 배경은 19세기 동아시아의 조선과 조선인에 대한 연구이다. 특히, 제정러시아의 동아시아국가들에 대한 관심사가 주된 것이다. 19세기 러시아 낭만주의 작가 곤차로프는 “전함<빨라다>”를 타고 서양인 중에 최초로 조선을 방문한 러시아 작가이다. 그는 유럽을 출발하여 극동아시아까지 1852-1855년에 걸쳐서 3년간 항해를 하면서 방문지의 풍속, 일상생활과 주민들의 심리에 대해서 상세하게 기록하였다. 그는 조선과 조선인에 대한 기록으로 유럽에 처음으로 소개한 러시아 낭만주의 작가이다. 본 연구에 의하면 조선에 대한 곤차로프의 서술은 좋은 느낌이 아니다. 하지만 그가 기록상 최초로 조선에 왔던 러시아인이란 자체만으로도 우리에게 중요한 의미가 있다고 생각한다. 현재는 과거로부터 축척되어 온 문화라고 하는 결과물이며, 본 연구는 자문화중심주의적 태도와 관점에서 러시아 작가 곤차로프가 바라본 조선시대의 시대상을 분석해 보았고, 이 연구가 한국과 러시아 양국 간의 교류협력을 위한 하나의 소중한 참고자료가 되었으면 한다.

This paper aims to study on the background of the 19th century’s Choson and its people in East Asia. In particular Tzarist Russia’s interest in this region. Goncharov, the first Russian writer of the 19th century’s Russian Romanticism, who had been to Choson in the navy battleship named “Prigate<Pallada>”. He joined a 3-year-expedition from Europe to Far Eastern Asia during the period of 1852-1855. Goncharov had recorded all the voyages of his expeditions in detail about the customs, daily lives and human psychology of the regional people. He is the first writer who introduced Choson and its people to the West. This study found that the writer’s first impression on Choson was not satisfying. Nevertheless, Goncharov’s expedition is meaningful by itself because he is the first Russian who had been to Choson. This paper analyzes Goncharov’s viewpoint on the manners and ethnocentrism of the phases of the times of Choson and it will hopefully be a good reference to the international relations between Korea and Russia.
