ASEAN과 중국에 대한 일본기업의 해외직접투자 전략의 차이

Differential on FDI Strategies of Japanese Companies in ASEAN and China

본 연구는 해외직접투자를 통해 ASEAN4와 중국에 진출한 일본기업의 생산 활동이 어떤 요인들에 의해 설명되며, 일본의 공업생산으로 대변되는 일본의 경제성장에는 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는지를 분석하였다. 1997-2010년 자료에 나타난 일본기업의 FDI 현황과 특징을 살펴보고 주요 경제지표와 상관분석을 실시하였다. 또한 요인분석과 경로분석을 통해 이 기간의 경제 환경 변화에 대해 ASEAN4와 중국에 진출한 일본기업의 전략 차이를 규명하였다. 일본의 투자/GDP, 금리, 환율, 임금 변화 등 경제적 충격에 대해 ASEAN4에 진출한 일본기업은 단순히 현지 설비투자의 확대로 대응하기보다는 현지고용 확대로도 대응했다. 한편 이러한 경제적 충격에 대해 중국에 진출한 일본기업은 기존의 연구결과와는 다르게 현지고용 확대로 대응하기보다는 더 자본집약적이며 기술집약적인 현지설비투자의 확대로 대응했다. 현지설비투자의 확대는 중국진출 일본기업이 노동집약산업과 자본집약산업에 투자하였다는 사실을 의미하며, 이는 중국의 산업구조가 노동집약산업에서 자본집약산업으로 확대됨을 의미한다. 일본기업의 이러한 대응의 결과가 일본의 수출을 증가시키고 공업생산도 증가시킨 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 일본기업의 중국에 대한 자본집약산업으로 확대 전략은 저렴한 노동력의 확보가 쉽지 않은데서 온 것이라는 사실은 한국 기업이 어떤 차원에서 중국에 진출해야 하는지에 대해 시사하고 있는 것이다.

This research analyzes what explains the production behavior of overseas subsidiaries of Japanese companies and how the production behavior affects the industrial productions of Japan. Using 1997~2010 data it reviews the FDI developments of Japanese companies and conducts correlation analyses with economic variables. Also it investigates, based on factor analyses and path analyses, responses of overseas subsidiaries of Japanese companies to the economic changes. Those companies that had entered ASEAN4 countries varied their local employments in response to the changes in interest rates, Investment/GDP, exchange rates, and wages while those companies that had entered China expanded their local equipment investments(high-tech and capital-intensive investments) along with the local employments. The expansion of local equipment investments of Japanese subsidiaries in China hints that industrial structure in China is moving toward capital intensive phase. These responses are shown to increase the exports and industrial productions and induced economic growth in Japan. Also the fact that these strategies(capital intensive industry) came up from the uneasiness of getting cheap labors any more gives an implication how Korean companies should expand their businesses in China.
