혐오와 분노 그리고 연민의 윤리

Disgust, Anger and Ethics of Compassion

코로나19 팬데믹 상황은 감염 가능성에 대해 회피하는 자연적 본능으로서의 혐오뿐만이 아니라, 사회 문화적으로 은폐되어온 다양한 양상의 혐오와 분노의 감정을 광범위하게 드러나게 한다. 특히 특정 집단이나 개인에 대한 투사적 혐오는 사회적 편견이나 낙인을 가져와 이들에 대한 사회적 배제나 차별을 더욱 강화시킬 수 있다. 또한 사람들은 공중보건 차원에서 공동체의 안전에 위협을 주는 개인이나 집단의 행위에 대해 분노의 감정을 표출하기도 하며, 이것은 공적 제도 개선을 위한 적절한 의사소통의 역할에 기여하기도 한다. 그러나 분노가 타인의 인격에 대한 폄하나 이들이 속한 집단에 대한 공격으로 나아갈 경우 투사적 혐오와 구분하기 어려워진다. 이러한 유형의 혐오나 이와 유사한 분노는 무엇보다도 존중되고 보호되어야 하는 자유로운 인격에 대한 훼손이나 폭력을 가져올 수 있다. 그러면 인격의 훼손이나 폭력을 가져오는 혐오나 분노의 감정에 대항하여 인격 존중과 인간 사이의 연대감으로 나아가게 하는 감정의 윤리란 무엇인가? 이 글은 누스바움의 감정의 이론에 근거하여 인간의 취약성과 사멸성에 대한 보편적인 인식을 바탕으로 한 연민의 윤리에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 연민의 윤리는 인간은 누구나 전염병에 감염될 수 있는 생명체이며 동시에 이로 인해 죽을 수 있는 인격체라는 인식을 전제로 한다. 이러한 인간의 보편적인 취약성과 사멸성에 대한 공감적 인식을 내포하는 연민은 인간사이의 고립과 배제나 차별이 아닌 인격 존중을 위한 인간 사이의 연대감을 형성하게 하는 것이다.

COVID-19 pandemic have created a proper condition in which diverse disgust and anger are exploded widely. In particular, increased disgust which projected onto vulnerable groups and infected people have incited social exclusions and discrimination. It can lead to a fixed social prejudice and stigma. People express also an anger through improper actions, which threat public health of communities. An appropriate expression of anger can be a tool for expanding social communication to improve public health care policies for vulnerable groups. But when anger becomes aggressive and violent to the persons in question and threatens then human dignity, the thin line between the disgust and anger is blurred. Based on Nussbaum’s theory, this article attempts to provide a proper view on ethics of emotion against disgust and anger which result in social isolation, discrimination and a threat to the humanity in the situation of COVID-19 pandemic. This view can be regarded as the ethics of compassion, which leads to a solidarity among people and respect for human dignity. The ethics of compassion and the sympathetic awareness of the human vulnerability and finitude will establish human solidarity for the protection of humanity.
