한국 사상과 현대 과학의 흐름 속에서 본 코로나-19와 면역

Covid-19 and Immunity from the Perspectives of Korean Thought and Modern Sciences

지금 우리 모두가 겪고 있는 팬데믹이 자연 현상임을 부인할 수는 없다. 하지만 이때 떠올리는 자연은 문화에 따라 다를 수 있다. 동아시아 전통의 자연(自然)은 스스로 그러한 ‘되어감’이다. 서양의 네이처(nature)는 똑같이 자연으로 번역되지만 객관적 대상으로서의 ‘있음’이다. 코로나-19를 겪는 방식도 어떤 자연을 살아가는지에 따라 다를 수 있다. 지금까지는 주로 감염병의 과학인 면역학이 생산한 지식이 병을 앓고 겪는 기준이었다. 여기서는 숙주와 기생체의 투쟁이란 은유가 지배적이었다. 하지만 면역학의 새로운 이론인 항원성 연결망 이론은 면역을 병원체와의 관계를 통해 지속적으로 변화하며 진화하는 생명의 정체성 관점에서 바라본다. 기계적 환원론을 극복한 진화생물학과 유전학 등의 현대 생물학은 스스로 그렇게 변해가는 동아시아의 자연이 귀히 여기는 역설의 진실을 수용한다. 역설은 생명 진화의 동력이기 때문이다. 의미는 물질과 상호 배타적 존재가 아니라 물질과의 묘한 결합을 통해 진실의 새로운 국면을 보여주는 ‘없이 있는’ 거울상이다. 항원성 연결망 이론과 역설의 생물학은 이렇게 동아시아 전통 사유에 접근한다. 이 논문은 법칙으로 정리된 과학이 아닌 변해가는 정체성과 역설을 수용하면서 새롭게 되어가는 스스로 그러한 자연을 통해 지금의 사태를 바라보면서 새로운 삶의 규범을 찾아보려는 무모한 지적 모험의 첫 산물이다.

We cannot deny that the current pandemic we are suffering from is a natural phenomenon. But the ‘nature’ we are thinking may be different depending on the culture we belong to. East Asian traditional nature is the ‘becoming itself of itself.’ Western nature is the objective being in which we find ourselves. The ways we suffer from Covid-19 may be different depending on what kind of nature we are living in. Up until now knowledges produced by immunology-the science of infection-has been the criteria by which to experience the disease. Here the metaphor of conflict between the host and parasite has been dominant. However, in Idiotypic Network Theory proposed by Niels Jerne, an organism’s immunity is the continuously changing and evolving identity in relation to the antigenic elements of its own and external environment. In this scheme, evolving to the new nature by going through the pandemic together with fellow people is more important than avoiding the pandemic individually. Modern biologies that overcome the mechanistic reductionism; i.e., evolutionary biology and various -omics, accept the paradoxical truth that East Asian Naturalism has long been preciously valued. Being and being without being, matter and meaning are not mutually exclusive, but mutual catalysts showing new aspects of truth by uncannily combining together. In this way, Idiotypic Network Theory and Paradoxical Biology come close to the traditional East Asian thinking. This article is a product of the intellectual adventure trying to find out new norm by accepting the changing identities and paradoxes of life and not the laws of nature produced by the conventional sciences.
