근세 일본인의 공중도덕 형성에 관한 고찰

A Study of the Formation of Public Etiquette in Tokugawa Reign

본 논문은 근세 일본인의 공중도덕이 어떤 과정을 거치면서 형성됐는지 그 배경을 규명하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 기존의 연구에서도 이 문제를 직접적으로 다룬 의미 있는 연구 성과물은 찾아보기 어렵다. 따라서 본고에서는 외국인의 일본견문록에 나타난 近世 일본인의 공중도덕 실태를 재구성해 보고, 이의 형성 배경으로서 당시의 정치적 환경에 주목함으로써 양자간의 상관성을 검토하고자 한다. 도쿠가와(德川)시대 일본인들의 공중도덕(수치심, 질서, 정직, 근검절약, 청결, 상부상조, 책임의식 등)에 대해서는 외국인이 남긴 대부분의 견문록들이 긍정적인 관찰기록을 남기고 있다. 이러한 德目이 사회적으로 형성된 배경에는 다양한 영향(仁政, 修身교육, 경제안정 등)이 상정될 수 있으나, 본고의 검토 결과로는 일상생활 전반에 걸친 도쿠가와 권력의 지속적이고 일관된 통제와 관여라는 조건이 주요하게 작용하고 있었음을 알 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to identify background processes that has contributed to formate Japanese public etiquette in modern society. No research however has yet achieved a major breakthrough in this field. This study is conducted to review Japanese public etiquette of modern times through foreign travel writings about Japan, focus on the then-political environment as the background of the formation of Japanese public etiquette and examine correlativity between Japanese public etiquette and its political environment. The travel writings provide mostly positive comments that Japanese people in the Tokugawa period bore public etiquette such as disgrace, public order, honesty, frugality, mutual aid, and sense of responsibility. With the formation of the public etiquette in early modern Japanese society, diversity factors can be raised; benevolent government, ethics education and economic stability. This study however finds out that consistent, continuous control and involvement of political power played a key role in the public etiquette formation throughout ordinary life in the Tokugawa period.
