Localizing semantic processing in children’s language comprehension: An activation Likelihood Estimation(ALE) meta-analysis

의미처리는 단어의 의미(단독 또는 컨덱스트에서)를 추정하는 것으로 정의하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 아동의 의미처리에 관여하는 뇌 영역을 파악하는 것이다. 본 연구에서 평균연령이 10.1살의 238명 건강한 아동(48% girls) 피험자를 포함된 9개 기능성 자기공명 영상(functional magnetic resonance imaging, fMRI) 실험을 포함하였다. 본 연구는 초기 처리 단계에 대한 구문처리 부하를 변화하지 않게 유지하면서 의미처리 부하를 명시적으로 변화시키는 기능성 자기공명 영상 연구를 포함하였다. 의미처리에 관여하는 뇌 영역을 탐구하기 위해서 활성화 가능성 추정 기법(Activation Likelihood Estimation, ALE)을 사용하였다. 활성화 가능성 추정 기법을 적용한 메타분석은 GingerALE 3.0.2 프로그램을 통해 수행되었고, 의미처리에 관여 뇌 영역을 시각화하기 위해 Mango 4.0.1 프로그램이 사용되었다. 연구결과에 따라 아동의 의미처리에서 좌측 하전두회(Inferior Frontal Gyrus, IFG)의 중요한 역할을 확인하였고 의미처리를 위해 좌측 중측두회(Middle Temporal Gyrus, MTG)의 역할을 강조하였다. 아동의 의미처리는 좌우 기능 분화되는 것을 발견하였다. 마지막으로, 본 연구의 제한점을 기술하고 몇 가지 후속 연구를 제시하였다.

Semantic processing refers to computing the meanings of words (in isolation or in context). The purpose of this study was to investigate the brain areas related to children’s semantic processing. This study included 9 independent functional MRI experiments involved n= 238 healthy children (48% girls) with a mean age of 10.32 years. We included functional MRI experiments that explicitly varied the semantic processing load, while holding constant demands on earlier stages of processing. Reliable areas of activation in these studies were identified using the Activation Likehood Estimation(ALE) technique. The meta-analysis of Activation Likelihood Estimation was performed via GingerALE 3.0.2, and Mango 4.0.1 was utilized to figure out the brain locations. The results confirmed the critical role of the Left Inferior Frontal Gyrus(LIFG) in semantic processing. Moreover, the results revealed the role of Left Middle Temporal Gyrus(LMTG) for semantic processing. Children's semantic processing was lateralized. The limitations of this study, as well as some suggestions for the future research were presented.
