다문화사회로서의 항구도시

The Port City as Multicultural Society : The Case of Melaka, Malaysia

이 글은 말레이시아의 역사적인 항구도시 멀라까를 대상으로 멀라까 도시의 성격을 다문화사회로 규정하고, 이러한 문화적 특성이 형성, 변모하게 된 배경을 살펴본 다음, 이를 외래문화의 충돌, 즉 수용과 통합이라는 원리 또는 메커니즘 속에서 고찰하고자 한다. 다문화사회의 특성은 이질적인 문화가 외부로부터 유입되어 기존의 토착문화와 대립, 충돌하는 과정에서 형성되며, 이는 독특한 역사적 경험과 특수한 문화적 상황 속에서 끊임없이 변화하는 성격을 지니게 마련이다. 이 점에 착안하여 이 글에서는 멀라까 도시문화의 형성과 변화의 특성을 항구도시의 다문화적 성격의 변화과정에 조응하여 살펴본다. 항구도시 멀라까는 해상 네트워크를 통해서 다른 항구도시와 상호 유기적인 관계를 맺고 있었으며, 인근의 내륙 왕국과의 육상 네트워크에 둘러싸인 거점이기도 했다. 말레이 반도 내의 육상 네트워크와 멀라까 해협을 중심으로 이루어졌던 해상 네트워크의 접점이거나 양자의 사이에서 이를 연계하는 기능을 수행했던 멀라까는 사람과 물건, 정보가 집결되는 거점으로서, ‘만남과 교류의 기능’을 수행했던 것이다. 멀라까는 내륙의 왕국들의 직접적인 영향 하에 있으면서 해역을 통해 펼쳐지는 장대한 해상 네트워크를 확보하고 있었기 때문에 육지의 도시들과는 다른 역사와 문화의 공간이라고 할 수 있는 ‘해역 세계’에 속했다고 볼 수 있다.

This paper examines the cultural and historical characteristics and meanings of Melaka, Malaysia as a historic city which has been defined as a multicultural society. It investigates the historical background of the Melaka urban culture in the context of acculturation of the processes of foreign cultures in Melaka as a port city. Melaka city as a multicultural society has been experienced the formation and transformation of urban culture in the processes of cultural hybridity of other cultures. In this perspective, this paper deals with the cultural characteristics and meanings of formation and transformation of urban culture in the case of Melaka city as a historic port city which has been characterized as multicultural features in urban environment. Melaka as a port city had organic relationship with other port cities though maritime network, and functioned as a center, which linked to the inland neighbor kingdoms. It also functioned as a cultural broker which had relationship between the inland network of Malay Peninsula and the maritime network of Melaka Strait. It was the place of encounter and exchange as a center with lots of people, commodities and information. Melaka belonged to the sea world with diverse and complex historic and cultural environment because it had the wide maritime network, which linked land kingdom and sea world.
