이글은 1992년 수교 이후 괄목할만한 관계발전 속에서 한중간에 발생한 주요쟁점들을 분석하려는 것이다. 한국고대사를 둘러싼 역사쟁점은 한국 민족주의와 중화(中華)주의간의 충돌을 보여주고 있다. 다민족통일국가를 표방하는 중국은 현재 영토 내에서 이루어진 모든 역사적 기록들은 중국역사로 편입하려고 하는 한편, 한국은 고대부터 이어져온 자국민족의 역사를 지키려고 한다. 전략적 문제에서 한국은 중국과 미국사이에서 균형을 취하려고 하나 쉬운 일이 아닌 것 같다. 한국은 안보분야에서 한국의 맹방으로서의 미국을 중국으로 대체하기는 어려운 것으로 보인다. 탈북자문제는 인권문제와 함께 난민에 대한 국제법의 규정과 절차와 연관이 된다. 탈북자문제의 초점은 그들의 지위를 난민으로 정할 것인가 아니면 계속 불법월경자로 취급할 것인가에 모아져 있다. 마늘과 꽃게 분쟁 협상과정에서 보여주듯이 중국과의 협상에서 한국의 나약한 협상지위는 양국간의 객관적인 물리적 비대칭성에서 비롯될 뿐만 아니라 중국의 중화중심주의와 한국의 사대주의적 습성에서도 부분적으로 원인이 있다고 본다. 한중관계의 건전한 발전을 위해서는 중국편중의 무역관계를 다변화하고 기술발전의 격차를 유지하는 등 양국경제의 상호보완성을 유지하려는 노력이 필요하며, 미국변수와 북한변수를 적절히 통제할 수 있는 외교역량을 강화해야 한다
This paper aims to analyze major issues raised in the rapid developing Korea-China Relations after their diplomatic normalization in 1992. The history issue even showed the clash of Korean nationalism and Sino-centrism. China as a multi-ethnic country wants to incorporate all the histories of their minorities into its own history, while Korea tries to keep their national history in the ancient times. In strategy issue, it was not an easy job for South Korea to maintain balance between Washington and Beijing. In this area, China cannot be a substitute of the United States as the South Korea's unique ally. The North Korean defector issue involves human rights and International norms on refugees. The focus of the disputes has been the defectors' status (refugee versus illegal entry) and their treatment. The economic issue analyzed demonstrates the South Korea's weakness in the diplomatic negotiations with China as we saw in the disputes on Chinese marine products in the Korean market. The unbalance of their negotiation powers between the two nations comes not only from the objective physical asymmetry but also from the subjective factors such as Sino-centric behavior of China and submissive behavior pattern of Korea. For a sound Korea-China relationship, Korea should try to maintain the complementary nature of two economies by diversifying its trade markets and sustaining the technological superiority over China. It also should strengthen its diplomacy in order to properly control the North Korean factor and China-US relations one
