Analysis of Korean Regionalism based on Liberal, Progressive, and Constructive

본 논문은 사회과학의 주요 패러다임인 자유주의, 진보주의, 그리고 구성주의를 가지고 한국의 지역주의를 분석한 것이다. 한국의 지역주의에 대한 논의는 대부분 자유주의적인 관점과 진보주의적인 관점에서 연구되어 왔다. 자유주의적인 관점에 의하면 지역주의는 개인의 합리적인 선택의 결과이다. 왜냐하면 모든 사람들은 자신들의 이익을 최대로 하기 위하여 합리적으로 행동한다고 한다. 그러나 진보주의자들은 한국 사회의 불균형적인 발전, 즉 사회 구조의 경제적인 토대를 지역주의의 강력한 원인으로 강조한다.자유주의적인 견해는 개인의 행동을 지나치게 강조하는 반면 진보주의적인 시각은 구조와 환경을 애써 강조한다. 그러므로 개인과 구조를 모두 품고 그들의 상호관계와 그 결과, 그리고 사회적 정체성을 강조하는 구성주의가 한국의 지역주의를 연구하는 데에 있어서는 보다 바람직하다고 볼 수 있다.

Korean regionalism has been mostly studied with liberal and progressive viewpoints. According to the liberal viewpoint, regionalism is a result of individual rational choice because everybody acts rationally for maximizing his (or her) own interests. On the other hand, the progressives are very emphatic on unbalanced development (economic base of a social structure) in South Korea as a strong reason for regionalism.The liberal viewpoint overemphasizes an individual and his (or her) action, but the progressive one the structure and environment. Therefore, a constructive viewpoint is more desirable to study Korean regionalism because it embraces both an individual and structure and underlines their interaction and its result, social identity.
