미국인의 삶의 방식에 대한 비교문화적 고찰

우리나라가 21세기 국가 전략목표인 동북아비즈니스 센터화를 가능하게 하기 위해서는 각국의 다원화된 생활문화의 이해 및 선진국의 생활수준에 대해 인식하고 이에 접근하려는 노력이 필요하다. 특히 무역의존도가 높은 대한민국이 글로벌 스탠더드에 접근하기 위해서는 세계의 문화와 경제를 주도하는 미국과 미국인들을 올바르게 이해할 필요가 있으며, 이의 중요성은 결코 과소평가할 수 없다. 따라서 미국인의 정신과 실제 생활문화 그리고 그들의 사회 및 관습과 제도를 이해하고 간접 체험하도록 돕는 것은 그들과의 상호 교류는 물론 다국적기업의 본사를 유치하는데 기여할 것으로 보인다. 이러한 목적으로 본 연구에서는 세계의 경제전쟁을 주도하고 있는 미국 사람들의 실생활에서 가치관과 사고방식의 기본적인 차이점은 물론, 미국 생활문화의 겉과 속 그리고 그들의 강약점을 발견하고 합리적인 협력방안을 모색하였다. 미국은 긍정적인 것이든 부정적인 것이든 이 모두를 하나로 어우르며 신용과 신뢰의 사회를 다졌다. 제품 하나만 보더라도 품질, 가격, A/S 등 한마디로 100% 믿고 살 수 있는 나라이다. 그러나 미국에는 진실을 드러내놓고 제대로 이야기하는 이웃이 없다는 데서 문제점을 찾을 수 있지 않을까 생각된다. 상대방을 존중해서 그런 것 같은 긍정적인 일면이 있기는 하지만, 사실은 자신이 그로 인해 발생할지도 모를 어떤 손해를 조금도 보지 않겠다는 데 그 저의가 있는 것 같다. 그렇게 냉정하면서도 자신의 이익과 관계되면 저돌적으로 자기중심적이 되지 않나 싶다. 본 연구의 논의는 통상, 유학 등 현지에서 교류하고 있는 정부관료, 기업 그리고 경영학도 등 지구촌시대에 적응하려는 모든 사람들에게 실질적인 안내자의 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다. 아울러 이는 궁극적으로 한국이 동북아 비즈니스 메카로 발돋움하는 데 필요한 생활환경 개선을 위한 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest guidelines for Koreans to understand and exchange with the people of the U.S. who are leading the world today. These guideline are product of experiences in the country and previous studies of the author. The particular emphasis of this research is put on identification of differences of the US and Korea, and a search of rational approach to improvement of quality of life based on the value systems and ways of thinking of the people of the US. Although 'American Rational Ways' may have helped the US achieve a society of credit and reliability, he might have lost the invaluable ways of understanding emotional aspect of human being, reaching to the point of heartlessness and inhumanity. However, sense of independence of responsibility of the young generation of the US is something we Koreans would envy because these traits are believed to play a positive role in building global competitiveness in future. Historically the relationship between Korea and the US has developed over the long period of time since World War II and participation of the US troops in Korean War. Through the events and process between the two countries Korea has been fundamentally influenced by the US in the areas of culture, economy and politics. Young generations of Korea of today may have a tendency of anti-America. Notwithstanding we are in the situation that we need to learn a lot from the people of the US and its culture.
