The Local History, Urbanism, and Ethnic Identity: The Case Study of the Formation and Transformation of Urban Culture in Melaka(Malacca) as a Port City in Malaysia

본 연구는 말레이시아 멀라까의 지역사(local history)와 도시성(urbanism), 그리고 민족정체성(ethnic identity)의 특성이 역사적, 사회문화적 맥락에서 구체적으로 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가를 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 항구도시로서의 멀라까는 다문화사회로서 이질적이고 다채로운 문화적 요소들의 수용과 배척이라는 과정을 통해 도시성을 형성, 변화시키는 특징을 지니고 있다. 그것은 다양한 문화가 서로 충돌하는 현장일 뿐 아니라 그러한 과정을 중재하는 문화적 중개자로서의 역할을 수행하는 경제적, 문화적 장소이기도 하다. 이런 점에서 멀라까의 도시공간은 말레이시아 도시사회의 독특하면서도 고유한 문화적 의미가 만들어지고, 조작되며, 변형되는 역사적, 문화적 구성물이라고 할 수 있다. 이 논문은 기본적으로 멀라까라는 항구도시의 공간과 사회문화적 체계에 대한 연구이다. 멀라까의 역사적 과정 속에서 항구도시의 시공간 체계가 현대성과 도시성을 획득하는 과정에서 어떻게 형성, 변화되었으며 그것이 각각 내부의 각 민족집단의 문화적 정체성을 어떻게 재편하였는가를 기술, 분석함으로써 멀라까의 지역사와 도시성, 그리고 민족정체성 사이에 어떠한 관계가 설정될 수 있는지를 고찰하였다. 이는 멀라까의 도시문화의 형성과 변화 과정을 다각도로 이해하기 위해 역사적 접근방식을 활용하여 식민도시의 특성과 구조를 지닌 멀라까의 도시화 과정 및 그에 대한 주민들의 반응을 체계적으로 기술하기 위함이었다. 이를 통해 멀라까 도시문화의 형성과 변화에 영향을 미친 다양한 요인을 고려하게 되면 도시문화가 단일한 하나의 문화로 구성되어 있는 것이 아니라 다양하고 복합적인 요인들의 역사적 구성물임을 이해할 수 있었다. 나아가 도시 내의 민족정체성이 시대적 상황과 문화적 환경에 따라 끊임없이 변화하는 유동적인 것이라는 사실도 확인할 수 있었다. 한마디로, 멀라까는 이질적이고 다채로운 문화 또는 문화적 요소의 수용과 배척이 일어나는 다문화사회인 것이다.

This paper aims to understand the interrelationships among local history, urbanism, and ethnic identity in Malaysia with special reference to the cultural characteristics and meanings of the formation and transformation of urban culture in port city, Melaka(Malacca), which is located in the middle area of Malay Peninsula. In this paper, I investigate to the characteristics and meanings of sociocultural system of Melaka city that had been a well-known historic-cultural port city. Melaka as a port city had been the most remarkable characteristics of multicultural society, namely the society that has the many colored cultural factors and is the cultural field that contacts and clashes the other cultures and lots of heterogeneous and multiple cultures within there. In this process, the urban culture of Melaka has been formed and transformed by the inclusion and exclusion to them. The local history, urbanism, and ethnic identity of Melaka have an enormous influence on the formation and transformation of Melaka urban culture. Especially, the cultural uniqueness of local history and the historical features of ethnic identity of Melaka has a special meaning to the formation of Malaysian urban cultural mosaics in Melaka port city as a multicultural society. And it is known that the Melaka urban culture has been changed in terms of the long-time historical processes and experiences of Melaka people. In short, Melaka as a historic-cultural port city, has been a multicultural society that occurs to the encounter and clash of many other cultures, in that sphere.
