The goal of this paper is to understand Russian minority communities in Harbin in the framework of the diaspora. Existing studies of ethnic relations mostly focus on pull factors of transnational migrants in the country of destination, ignoring the importance of those factors related with their original homeland. The current study of Russian minority communities in Harbin as the typical diaspora, however, shows that identities of those Russian refugees were formed either by the restoration of their original homeland or by the maintenance of a collective memory about their homeland, the Russian empire. Finally this study discusses implications of Russian minorities in Harbin at the early 20th century in terms of transnationality of ethnic relations.
