In the politically volatile Middle East, where women are a particularly vulnerable social group - the object of various policies, laws, and pressures - changes in women's status must be understood in the context of past and present laws, social class, type of national development and political regime, and geography. In this paper, My purpose is twofold: to fill in a gap in Iranian women's studies and to examine the relationship between ideological and economic factors in the Islamic Republic. Studies of the experiences and patterns of women's employment have become recognized as important contributions to the understanding of existing economic and social relations. Women in Iran are operating under a set of formidable ideologies: the ideology of patriarchy and gender-inequality that is common to all societies and the ideology of Islamic social relations, with its emphasis on gender differences and female domesticity as well as the invidious notion of female danger. Such a cultural/ideological milieu is unfavorable to women's economic independence, equality with men, and general social progress.
