This study tries to analyze in depth the determination of entry mode(both wholly owned or equity-shared) proposed at the first time a firm is engaged in a foreign direct investment(FDI). The main purpose of this study is to test empirically both the determinants of entry mode and its effects on the FDI performance. This research was conducted in two stages. First, a research model was designed by reviewing relevant theories, previous studies, and the current investment situations. Second, a survey of Korean firms engaged in investment projects in China was done by collecting questionnaires from the relevant firms. With this survey, both single and multiple regressions were used to test several hypotheses. The empirical findings are as follows: First, the determinants of Korean investment in China seem to include investor's demand for local resources, foreign subsidiary's dependency on the parent company's manpower, efficiency-seeking motive, investor's marketing ability, foreign subsidiary's dependency on the parent company, investment risk, and market-seeking motive. Second, the entry mode seems to have a statistically significant influence on the investment performance in the case of Korean investment in China. Third, market-seeking motive, investor's demand for local manpower, and subsidiary's alternative seem to be the determinants of ownership that have direct effects on the investment performance.
