This paper is intended to understand the interrelationship between the Islamization processes and the social change in rural Malay society. It is focused on the change of the characteristic of Malay Islam and rural Malay society. It draws the attention to the charicteristics of Islamization in rural Malay society and its change in the Islamic doctrines and principles, and reveals the interrelationship between Islamization and social change in rural Malay society. It is based on historical and ethnographic research as well as an extened period of fieldwork in the village of Paya Ular(kampung Paya Ular) in Kelantan state. This is, typically, the Kelantanese village that is constituted by the Malays only, from an ethnic distribution point of view, and is well-known that it has strong Islam or the most fundamentalistic features of the Malay Islam. The Kelantan state has been famous for strong in the Islamic way of life and fundamental way of belife in Islam of the other Malaysian states. The kampung Paya Ular is a kampung Islamization has been happened dramatically since 1970s, when the Islamic revival movement begins with the enormous change of the Malay society and culture. Islam has been a dominant feature of religious and everyday life in the village, and villagers have been influenced by the various and complex processes of Islamization, socalled dakwah'(originally 'calling Islam'in Malay) movement. This paper therefore examines the way specific local processes of Islamziation have accomodated themselves to, and have been shaped by, the state and national dynamics of socio-cultural, political, and economic sphere. The process of change they have experienced is not so much the extension of the Islamic fundamentalism, or the Islamic doctrines and theology as the creation of distinctive interpretation and practice which were identified with Islamic transformation or Islamic development.
