Economic Efficiency of Smart Farms: The Case of Lettuce

This paper analyzes economic efficiency of lettuce smart farms using the data envelopment analysis(DEA). It attempts to suggest how smart farms improve their economic performance by measuring economic efficiency and comparing it with the efficiency of conventional farms. Economic efficiency is divided into profit efficiency and cost efficiency. Through examining technical efficiency, allocative efficiency and scale efficiency which is detailed, we identify the cause of inefficiency. As a result, a conventional farm is evaluated as the efficient and it was suggested that smart farms need to find a way to reduce the water, electricity and heating costs and investment cost for facilities to be the efficient farm.
