조선시대 생태환경사 연구의 현황과 과제

Current Status and Remaining Tasks of Researches on Ecological and Environmental History in the Chosŏn Dynasty: Focusing on the Climate History and Disaster History

인간 중심의 역사에서 탈피하여, 조선시대의 변화 요인을 다각적으로 검토하고, 오늘날의 환경문제 해결을 위한 근거를 찾기 위해 조선시대 생태환경사 연구는 필요하다. 이 글은 조선시대의 제반 환경적 요소들과 인간의 ‘상호작용’ ‘상호관계성’에 주목하고 있는 연구들을 정리·소개하고 향후의 연구 과제를 전망하는 데 목표를 두고 있다. 연구들이 기후사 또는 재해사 관련 주제들에 치중된 경향이 있었으므로 이들을 우선적으로 정리하였다. 역사학, 경제학, 지리학, 기후학, 건축학 등 학계 분야를 가리지 않고 최대한 많은 연구성과들을 소개하고자 하였다. 첫째, 환경이 인간사회에 미친 영향을 분석한 연구를 소개하였고, 둘째, 조선 사람들이 환경과 재해에 대해 어떻게 인식하고 대응하였는지를 분석한 연구들을 소개하였다. 한편, 각 연구에서 활용되고 있는 기록의 신뢰성에 대한 연구자들의 견해차도 살펴보았다. 조선 기록유산의 활용 가치를 인정하고 그 활용도를 높이는 방안을 모색하는 입장도 있는 반면, 자료의 정치성·주관성 등 근본적인 한계를 강조하는 입장도 있다. 자료의 신뢰성은 기존 연구들을 검증하고 미래 연구를 확산하기 위해 반드시 논의될 필요가 있지만, 논의의 방향은 자료의 한계를 지적하는 것에서 그치지 않고 그 활용방안을 모색하는 것으로 나아가야 한다. 또 편중되고 산발되어 있는 연구 경향에서 벗어나 연구주제들이 다각화되고 각 연구들이 상호간에 연계될 필요가 있다. ‘생태환경사적 관점’에서 동식물ㆍ거주지ㆍ경작지 등의 제반 요소와 인간사회의 연결고리를 연구하는 성과들이 더욱 확산되어야 할 것이며, 이를 위해 학제간 융합 연구도 좀 더 적극적으로 추진되어야 할 것이다. 인간과 환경의 ‘연쇄반응’ ‘복합반응’에 주목하여 역사 속 환경 요인을 주목하되 기후결정론에 빠지지 않는 균형을 기대해본다.

To break away from a human-centered history, to examine various factors affecting changes in the Chosŏn, and to find the basis for solving today's environmental problems, a study on ecological and environmental history of the Chosŏn Dynasty is necessary. Thus, the purpose of this study was to predict future research tasks by introducing and arranging research results of historical, economic, geography, and architecture academia on ecology and environmental history of Chosŏn. Some studies have analyzed the impact of the environment on human society, while others have analyzed how humans perceived and responded to the environment, showing conflicting views on the reliability of records and data used in each study. The reliability of data needs to be discussed to verify existing studies and spread future research. It should not stop at pointing out limitations of the data, but move on to finding ways to use them. In addition, research topics should be diversified and each research should be linked to each other, overcoming biased and sporadic research tendencies. Results of studying the link between various elements such as animals and plants, habitation, cultivated land, and human society from the 'ecological and environmental historical perspective' should continue to spread. For this purpose, interdisciplinary convergence research should be actively promoted. If we pay attention to ‘complex reaction’ or ‘chain reaction’ between humans and the environment, we will be able to avoid falling into climate determinism while discussing environmental factors in history.
