‘에클레시아’의 어원적 접근을 통한 교회론

Ecclesiology through the Etymological Approach of Ekklesia

‘그리스도의 몸인 교회’의 정체성과 그 본질을 알기 위해 ‘교회’라는 단어의 어원을 다시 생각해 본다. 왜냐하면, ‘에클레시아’로 흔히 언급되는 ‘교회’의 어원을 통한 ‘교회론’은 때론 그 한계를 드러낼 뿐 아니라 논리적 오류를 강요당할 수 있기 때문이다. 문제는 현대에 이르러 그 어느 때보다 건강한 ‘교회론’의 확보가 시급한 상황이라는 점이다. 그런 점에서, 건강한 ‘교회론’을 정립하기 위해 그 어원으로부터 ‘교회’의 의미를 살펴보며, 그동안 시간 역사 가운데 흘러 내려온 적응 과정을 살펴본다. 이것은 언어의 역동성과 문화적 상응성이라는 점을 새롭게 발견하게 한다. 그리고 그 역사적 맥락을 통한 신학적 이해는 오히려 교회 정체성 확립과 그 본질로부터 흘러나오는 교회 속성으로서의 보편적 성격을 확인할 수 있게 한다. 결과적으로 ‘에클레시아’라는 정제된 언어를 통한 ‘교회론’은 그 중심이 ‘오직 그리스도’라는 분명한 정체성과 그리스도를 중심으로 묶인 공동체의 사명으로서의 교회의 보편성이란 성격을 분명하게 확인하게 한다.

The purpose of this study is to understand the identity and nature of the “Church, the Body of Christ”; first, we must reconsider the etymology of the word “Church.” This reconsideration of the etymology of the “Church,” commonly referred to as “evkklhsi,a,” is vital because at times it reveals the errors and logical limitations of ecclesiology. The pressing problem, especially in modern times, is the importance of urgency in securing a healthy ecclesiology. In this regard, in order to establish a healthy ecclesiology, we examine the etymology of “church,” which shows the process of the historical adaptations of the word. Through this, we are able to discover the dynamics of language and cultural correspondence. Furthermore, a theological understanding through its historical context allows us to confirm the establishment of church identity and the catholicity of the church, which flows from its essence. As a result, ecclesiology examined through the context of the refined language of “evkklhsi,a” clearly confirms the center of the identity of ecclesiology as only through Christ and confirms the nature of the catholicity of the church as the mission of the community bound around Christ.
