본 연구는 그동안 제주 지역사 연구에서 소외되어 왔던 제주지역 무과 운영과 무과급제자에 대한 관심에서 출발하여 그 실제를 파악해 보았다. 조선시대 제주는 지리적인 이유로 과거 운영에 있어 상당한 수준의 배려가 있었다. 식년시와 증광시 전라도향시 인원 25인 중 3인을 배정받아 1513년(중종 8)부터 시행되었다. 실제 제주 무과향시의 운영 사례를 검토한 결과 기록으로 확인되는 횟수는 73회이고, 124명이 입격하였다. 이러한 결과로 볼 때 제주 무과향시는 거르지 않고 모두 시행된 것으로 보인다. 다음은 제주에서 시행된 외방별과와 외방별시를 살펴보았다. 조선시대 제주 무과 외방별과는 모두 19회로 파악되며, 156명이 입격하였다. 철종대에는 제주 외방별과가 외방별시로 승격되어 총 두 번 시행되었는데, 무과 장원 급제자 이언길과 양제호를 확인하였다. 또한 1854년(철종 5) 갑인제주별시 방목을 통해 급제자 8명을 추가로 확인한것도 본 연구의 큰 성과라 판단된다. 마지막으로 마병도시와 별포과의 운영에 대해 살펴보았다. 마병도시와 별포과는 거수자에게 직부전시의 특혜를 주는 시험으로 다른 지역에 비해 늦게 시행되었다. 그리고 제주지역 무과 급제자 현황을 파악하였다. 본 연구에서는 ｢역대인물｣ 급제자 174 명, 제주별시 8명, 홍패 확인 인원 9명, 급제선생안 73명, 증보탐라지 21명 등 모두 285명(중복 제외)이 확인되었다. 이 인원은 제주지역 무과급제자 최소 인원이라고생각된다.
This study confirmed specific cases of the implementation of the military exam in Jeju. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the first Jeju military exam was continuously conducted by assigning three personnel belonging to Jeolla Province, and through the records, 73 tests were conducted and 124 people passed. Next, an official who was assigned a special mission was sent to Jeju to take a military exam. A total of 19 tests were conducted and 156 soldiers passed. During the reign of King Cheoljong, special military exams were conducted only in Jeju, and in two tests, Lee Eon-Gil and Yang Je-ho took first place. In 1854, eight soldiers passed the special military exam conducted in Jeju. Finally, the operation of Jeju Mabyeongdosi(馬兵都試) and Byeolpo-Gwa(別砲科) was considered. Through this study, 285 people who passed the Jeju military exam were confirmed, and this number is considered to be the minimum number of those who passed the Jeju military exam.
