A Study of Unsuk Chin’s 《12 Piano Etudes》: Analysis and performance suggestions for No. 1 to No. 6 published

This study analyzes the No. 1 to 6 works published under the theme of Unsuk Chin's "12 Piano Etudes" and presents parts that can help the ideal performance from a performer's perspective. In addition, for the genre "Etude," which corresponds to this work also tracks the changes in meaning over time. Each etude contains a title that reflects the content of the piece. <Piano etude No. 1> ‘in C’, <Piano etude No. 2> ‘Sequenzen’, <Piano etude No. 3> ‘Scherzo ad libitum’, <Piano etude No. 4> ‘Scalen’, <Piano etude No. 5> ‘Toccata’, <Piano etude No. 6> ‘Grains’. As a result of analyzing through the score, her etudes included many features in terms of ‘sound’, ‘rhythm’, and ‘scale’. First, she tried to create a unique sound through the use of pedals(sustain pedal and sostenuto pedal) in <Piano etude No. 1> and <Piano etude No. 6>. Secondly, it applies a complex rhythm system through rhythmic ostinato, which can be found in <Piano etude No. 2>, and the polyrhythm that appears throughout the work. Third, the sound C is emphasized by the use of whole-tone scale and harmonic series with C sound as fundamental tone. On the basis of the findings, the work reveals Unsuk Chin's new and original musical language, while at the same time showing that the traditional appearance is not excluded. It was also impressive that each piece was not only excellent in an independent way, but also organically related to each other. Contemporary music is often ambiguous and difficult like a riddle, but many composers try to express musical ideas and intentions through musical scores or interviews. I think these features can be an invigorating factor in the study of Contemporary music. In response to this, contemporary performers and researchers should actively conduct research. I hope that this study will serve as the foundation for the development of modern music.
