장후이원의 단편소설 <맹인들> 속의 ‘폭력성’ 연구

A Study on the ‘Violence’ in Zhang Huiwen’s Short Novel, The Blind

<맹인들>은 장후이원이 2011년에 잡지 《강남》에 발표한 단편소설이다. 불특정 다수는 눈요깃거리가 무엇이든 간에 자신과 무관하고, 자신에게는 죄가 없다고 여기며, 더러는 ‘보여진’ 상대의 불행과 고통을 강 건너 불구경하듯 보면서 즐거워한다. 하지만 오늘을 살아가는 우리는 언제 어디서나 예기치 않게 불행을 만나고, 이러한 영혼의 결핍이나 사랑의 부재를 경험할 수 있다. 따라서 <맹인들>은, 첫째, 현대 도시의 어둠에 관한 작품이다. 도시는 낮이고 밤이고 불을 밝혀 화려함을 뽐내며 어둠이라곤 없는 듯하다. 작품은 도시에 빛이 있어도, 눈을 뜨고 뻔히 보면서도 볼 수 없고, 잃어버린 것들에 관해 이야기한다. 둘째, 거리를 오가는 웃음 짓고 편안해 보이는 사람들 가운데 누군가는 가정폭력, 인신매매, 동물 학대, 투기, 노름, 아동학대 등 폭력의 가해자 아니면 피해자일 수 있다는 점을 보여준다. 셋째, 어떠한 폭력이든 간에 경각심을 갖고 폭력을 방지하고 해소하지 못한다면, 사람의 삶은 뺑소니차에 깔려 다치거나 죽은 동물만 못할 수도 있음을 드러냈다. 마지막으로, <맹인들>은 ‘참사랑’의 ‘부재’에 대해 경종을 울려준다. 이토록 폭력이 판을 치는 사회에서는 가정도 친구도 안전하지 않다. 자신을 보호하고 위로받을 수 없게 된 것은 참사랑과 인정이 메말라버린 데서 비롯된다. 가족끼리, 친구끼리, 동료끼리 서로 이해하고 배려하고 사랑하고 용서하는 따뜻한 마음 없이, 일방통행적인 사랑과 이해, 관심, 배려, 용서와 화해를 원하는 자기중심의 이기심이 얼마나 위험한지, 자기 자신의 정신과 영혼을 어떻게 망가뜨리는지, 평범한 우리 모두의 삶을 어느 정도로 파괴하는지를 헤아려야 할 것이다. 아울러 함께 가며 마음과 정을 나누는 따뜻한 가정과 사회를 만들도록 노력해야 하겠다.

The Blind, published in the magazine 《Jiangnan》 in 2011, is a short story written by Zhang Huiwen. No matter what the points of interest are, the unspecified majority of people, feeling having nothing to do with themselves and innocent, enjoy seeing the “revealed” misfortunes and sufferings of the others one step back from the scene. However, in our everyday lives, we can encounter unpredictable reverses anytime and anywhere, and experience this lack of soul or absence of love. Therefore, The Blind, firstly, is a work about the darkness of a modern city. The city shows off its splendor by illuminating itself day and night as if there is no darkness, but it is a story about things that are lost and can’t be seen even if you open your eyes and there is light. Second, it shows that some of the smiling and relaxed people on the street can be either the attackers or victims of family violence, human trafficking, animal abuse, speculation, gambling, and child abuse. Third, it revealed that human life could be worse than that of an animal injured or killed by a hit and run vehicle if we are not aware of any kind of violence and if could not prevent and resolve it. Finally, The Blind makes a warning for the ‘absence’ of ‘true love’. In a society where violence is so prevalent, neither family nor friends are safe. The reason that people are unable to protect themselves and be comforted is true love and compassion has dried up. Without a warm heart of understanding, caring, loving, and forgiving among family members, friends, and colleagues, we need to keep in mind how dangerous self-centered selfishness is that desires one-way love, understanding, interest, consideration, forgiveness and reconciliation, how it destroys the soul, and to what extent it destroys the ordinary lives of all of us. At the same time, we should strive to build a warm family and society where we can share our hearts and affections.
