The purpose of the present study is to identify the factors affecting the suicidal ideation of the elderly in Korea. In particular, this study has investigated and identified the relative factors that affect the suicidal ideation of the young-old elderly and the elderly. About 22.3% of the subjects had suicidal ideation. The percentage reporting suicidal ideation among the young-old elderly was 19.2 percent while that among the old-old elderly was 28.7 percent. A survey of 2,794 elderly persons aged 65 years or older, who were listed on the Fifth National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) which was conducted in 2010-2011. The suicidal ideation of the two groups has been found to be caused by a number of different factors. The young-old elderly with a higher percentage of suicidal ideation were from lower income, Hyperlipidemia, Angina pectoris. In contrast, the old-old elderly who were females and suffered from a Arthirtis and Osteoarthritis, depression experienced for two consecutive weeks, high levels of stress showed a higher percentage of suicidal ideation. The study suggests improvements in targeting the aged and offering customized services in collaboration with the local community. Extra attention should be given to the following: lower income, have chronic disease, Arthirtis, Osteoarthritis, depression experienced for two consecutive weeks, and high levels of stress. The study Also argues that special support and mediation programs should be focused on old-older females who suffer from chronic disease, Arthirtis, Osteoarthritis and bad subjective mental health.
