The purpose of this research was to compare students’ speaking skills and perceptions between online classes and face-to-face classes. The current study included 25 students who took an English course online in 2021 and 25 students who took an English course in a face-to-face way in 2022. Students practiced English speaking and listening while taking College English face-to-face or online during the semester. All students took the pre- and the post-TOEIC speaking tests to examine their changes in speaking skills. The online questionnaire was used to collect information about student perceptions towards online or face-to-face classes. The data collected for this study were analyzed to compare means between the groups. The findings revealed that both groups improved their speaking skills at the end of the semester. With the exception of the final task of expressing opinions, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in the two TOEIC speaking tasks, reading aloud and answering questions. As for students’ perceptions, the questionnaire revealed notable differences between the two groups in terms of interaction, social presence, and academic engagement, except for self-regulated learning. Finally, the findings of this study were discussed in relation to future college English courses.
