연구목적: 본 연구의 목적은 네트워크에서 발생하는 집적경제(agglomeration economies)가 중소기업의 국제화에 미치는 영향을 자료를 이용하여 실증 분석하는 것이다. 본 연구는 집적경제의 개념을 중심으로 수출기업 네트워크가 중소기업의 국제화에 어떻게 도움을 주는지를 회귀분석을 통하여 설명한다. 구체적으로는 동종산업 집적경제와 이종산업 집적경제가 어떻게 다른 영향을 주는 지를 분석한다. 논문구성/논리: 본 고의 구성은 다음과 같다. 제1장에서는 본 연구의 배경과 목적을 설명하며 제2장에서는 집적경제 및 국제화와 관련한 선행연구 및 가설을 제시한다. 제3장에서는 실증연구를 위해 활용된 자료와 변수를 설명하며 제4장에서 실증분석 결과를 제공한다. 마지막 제5장에서는 본 연구의 내용에 대해 논하며 정리한다. 결과: 동종산업 집적경제의 크기가 커질수록 해당 지역 중소기업의 경우 국제화 확률이 늘어난다.반면 이종산업 집적경제의 경우 국제화를 시작할 확률이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 동종산업 집적경제의 경우 산업의 전문성 및 수출을 지원하는 자원들이 지역에 축적되어 외부효과가 나타남을 보인다. 또한 이종산업 집적경제의 경우 산업 간 지식 및 경험이 중소기업의 국제화에 직접적인 영향을 주지 않음을 나타낸다. 독창성/가치: 본 연구는 집적경제의 개념을 중심으로 수출기업 네트워크가 중소기업의 국제화에 어떻게 도움을 주는지를 회귀분석을 통하여 이해할 수 있게 한다. 동종산업 네트워크와 이종산업 네트워크가 어떻게 다른 영향을 주는지를 분석함으로서 네트워크의 특성별로 외부성이 다를 수 있음을 보여줄 수 있다. 집적경제와 국제화의 관계 자체에 대한 시사점과 더불어 어떤 종류(동종산업과 이종산업)의 외부성이 더 중요한지에 대한 정보를 제공해 줌으로써 중소기업이 외부성의 적극적인 활용을 통하여 국제화를 더 효율적으로 달성할 수 방법을 제안한다.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effect of agglomeration economies on the internationalization of SMEs. Focusing on the concept of the agglomeration economy, this study explains how the exporter agglomeration affects SMEs' internationalization. Specifically, we test the different effects of same-industry and cross-industry agglomeration on SMEs' exporting decisions. Composition/Logic: This paper is organized as follows. First, the research background and motivation are explained. Second, we review previous literature related to agglomeration economies and internationalization, to formulate the hypotheses. In the third section, we describe the data and methods. The fourth section will present the empirical models and results. In the final section, the main conclusions are pointed out and implications are suggested. Findings: An empirical analysis of Chinese SMEs shows the support of same-industry exporter agglomeration on SMEs export initiative, along with the negative impact of cross-industry exporter agglomeration on the exporting decision. These results suggest that positive externalities argued in agglomeration literature are only applicable to same-industry exporter agglomeration in the SME context. SMEs in larger cross-industry exporter agglomeration are unlikely to enjoy knowledge spillover from diverse industries and even suffer from a lack of specialized resources supporting exporting. Originality/Value: This study shows the effect of exporter agglomeration network on SMEs’ internationalization, and further suggests the different effects of same- and cross-industry agglomeration economies. Our study analyzes the formulation of different externalities in the same- and cross-industry agglomeration, and their implications for the SME’s internationalization. Specifically, we suggest that positive externalities argued in agglomeration literature are only applicable to same-industry exporter agglomeration in the SME context.
