Pedagogical Implications of Post COVID Restrictions on the Korean University EFL Classroom from the Teachers Perspective: A Case Study

본 연구는 국내 대학의 EFL 교사들이 2022년 봄 온라인 수업에서 실전 수업으로 전환하는 과정에서 사후 코로나 제한과 프로토콜의 도입을 어떻게 인식했는지 조사하였다. 서울 지역의 한 사립 대학에 고용된 17명의 교사들로부터 데이터가 수집되었 다. 초기 데이터 수집 방법으로는 객관식, 라이커트 척도, 개방형 질문으로 구성된 설문지가 사용되었다. 또한, 동의한 설문 조사 참가자들에게 더 자세한 답변을 논의하기 위해 이메일을 통해 연락되었다. 데이터는 일반적인 정성 분석을 사용하여 분석하고 기술 통계량을 사용하여 논의하였다. 연구 결과는 이러한 제한에도 불구하고, 선생님들은 일반적으로 그들의 교직 업무를 계속할 수 있었지만, 그들이 이용할 수 있는 교육적 선택의 제한된 숫자에 대해 높은 수준의 좌절감이 있었다는 것을 보여준다. 게다가, 그들은 마스크와 사회적 거리두기를 의사소통, 교실 참여, 그리고 수행에 있어 중요한 장애물로 간주한다. 이러한 발견의 행정적, 교육적 의미와 제한 사항도 논의된다.

This study investigated how EFL teachers at a Korean university perceived the introduction of post COVID restrictions and protocols during their classes during the transition from online classes to in-person classes in the spring of 2022. Data were collected from 17 teachers employed at a private university in the greater Seoul area. A survey questionnaire consisting of multiple choice, Likert scale and openended questions was used as the initial data collection method. In addition, survey participants who consented were contacted by e-mail to discuss responses in greater detail. Data was analyzed using general qualitative analysis and discussed using descriptive statistics. The findings show that despite the restrictions, teachers were generally able to continue their teaching duties but there were high levels of frustration with the limited number of pedagogical options available to them. In addition, they view masks and socially distancing as a significant hindrance to communication, classroom engagement, and performance. Administrational and educational implications of these findings as well as limitations are also discussed.
